Good morning engineerscan sell! After watching  a recent segment of The Big Idea with Donny Duestch which included the founder of StartupNation, I immedaitely reviewed the site, and joined! Great information to say the least!! After reading some of your replies to other members, I thought pehaps you could  share some of your thoughts/ insight regarding a device that could vitually stop/stall a vehicle from fleeing in the event it was being pursued, thus eliminating the possibility of a high speed chase and the tragic consequences that often follow. It would be simple to operate and would not require law enforcement, nor the consumer to purchase any special equipment. There is no doubt, that Cities/ Municipalities, would embrace a device like this, as they are constanly  faced with the liability issues surrounding high speed chases. I, also envision Insurance companies offering  discounts to  customers who have the device installed on their vehicle. You may be aware of a company called "LoJack" they offer theft deterent and vehicle recovery systems, however, they don`t have anything like I`m describing. I started  my first business at age 22-(NAPA AUTO PARTS STORES),  and since that time have opened and sold several others. We currently own a Real Estate Brokerage firm and a Real Estate Title Insurance Agency.   Even though I have the experience and comfort level regarding new ventures, I also realize what my strenghts and weaknesses are. I truly believe that once this idea/concept  goes from theroy to prototype there will be several global companies interested in this product, as it will provide an on going revenue stream. One may be able to simple sell the idea and eliminate the costs of design/manufacturing? However, I`m not sure how you would go about selling a major company an idea?  I recently recorded the idea in the USPTO Disclosure Document Program, I`m currently waiting on the return of my dated and stamped copy. In order for this idea to be successful, I will need to partner with someone or company, that not only shares the same vision as I do, but also has the expertise and industry contacts to proceed with the development. I would appreciate  any thoughts orcomments regarding this idea.

Best regards,

Ed

Ed, sounds interesting and I`m looking forward to seeing what`s posted on this.
Just in case you`re not aware: Disclosure Document Program [EXPIRED 01 February 2007] ... just in case you didn`t file before then and need a Provisional Application.

Tiger,

Thanks for the information! You are correct the Disclosure Document Program expired on Feb. 1, 2007. They suggested that I file the Provisional and the subsequent non-provisional regarding the idea. Which is where I`m at.

Thanks again!

dothingsright,

if you want to (excuse the pun) do things right, you would be well served by getting a product designer under your wing.  product design is basically the jack of all trades for putting any product on the market. a good designer can research, develop, prototype, CAD and market your invention.

good luck and God bless you.

Hopefully you`ve found the help you need, if not I can offer my experience and advice on the matter.  I`ve been in product design and development for the past 8 years and like Bunnerb said I can help really evaluate your idea and really customize it to bring you the best chance of success.  Take care and I wish you well.

Well, this topic is very near and dear to me because I own a product development / design company.  Here is my take:  If you absolutely do not have the money than you can consider building the prototype yourself or enlisting the help of a single engineer or designer.

BUT and this is the big but, development/design firms will do what they do best: Design and Develop!  That means taking everything into account such as human factors analysis (i.e. does this product feel right in an average person`s palm), refining designs (colors, surface material), marketability (how do we get this product to SELL well in the market.  Does it have a stunning design, yet function as intended?), legality (Does this product need FCC approval), sale requirements (i.e. If selling to big box retailers such as WalMart and Target electronic products will require a UL listing), product packaging, to cost optimization for mass production manufacturing (how can we design this product to decrease manufacturing costs and boost quality?).  All these factors play a big role in the success of your product and ultimately your brand.  These firms can help you develop something out of a simple sketch on a napkin, all the way to full 3D models, rapid prototypes, and ultimately helping you source a reliable manufacturer either domestic or overseas.

Also, for those short on money, many design/development firms including our own can work out a mutually beneficial arrangement such as designing your product for free but taking 2% - 3% royalty for every sale.  That way you don`t take a hit up front and only pay a small royalty if your product sells, so it is in the best interest of both the inventor / company and the design / development firm to make the most attractive, marketable, and successful product for you and your company.

Don`t be afraid to contact product design / development firms.  If your idea is good, I`m sure you can work something out with the firm that does not always require upfront payment for design and development services.

Don`t forget to sign a non-disclosure agreement with anybody you work with!  Protect your ideas.

Good Luck!

Hello Tyra,

I own a small product design firm specifically geared to inventors and entrepreneurs. I help clients get from the napkin sketch to store shelves.
Since every job is unique, to some degree, I would love to continue this thread via email (brice@getcaution.com). That way if you want me to sign an NDA and discuss, with specifics, your project, I am available to bounce ideas off of.
I look forward to hearing from you!
