That is right Craig. There are actually a few neat sites out there. I work in the E-commerce arena so i get the scoop through the wire. There is www.ecrater.com, a free auction site that has been getting some buzz, www.etsy.com for all things handmade and another www.wagglepop.com which has some controversy surrounding it????? There are also some great E-Store venues as well that are non auction but in one marketplace.

We`re experimenting with Shopify.com, and that looks pretty interesting. Free with a commision only on sales. We`ll see what happens.

That`s right I was going to post that and forgot. We will see how it goes. It may be an option for some.

Shopify, it does not seem to be a serchable marketplace. Are these to use with your own domain then? I love the look of it.

What Shopify seems to be doing is providing you with a virtual Web site-domain setup, and taking care of the templates and shopping cart. No, you don`t go to Shopify to search their entire "shopify mall." Instead, you take on your own store.

It`s a folder under the Shopfiy domain, but from that point forward, it`s yours. They`re even very discreet about "hosted by shopify," unlike other places that have massive banners blasting out all over the pages of what`s supposed to be your site.

When you`ve filled in the templates, IF someone finds your site in the normal way, THEN they can peruse your products, order things, ask questions, and go through a checkout counter. In that respect, the "search" capability is constrained only to your store, your products.

Shopify takes 3% commission on all sales through your particular site on their domain. You don`t pay them for sales you accrue elsewhere.

It`s not the perfect solution, and there are limits to the customization. But *for the concept* it provides a relatively easy, fast way to put up "a Web site" without spending money (for us bootstrappers!).

If you want to connect your actual domain to the Shopfiy store, that`s easy enough. They allow you to go in and change the underlying code. We did learn that if you change the code, it takes precedence over the "Wiki-like" editing capabilities. Your code overrides the more simple editor (like with eBay).

We want a site now. Don`t have the money now. We have a domain Now. Can`t figure it all out now. So we`re putting together a Shopify store. When it`s done and ALSO when the actual domain site is up and running, so what? It`s like having a "branch" or "subsidiary" office. :-D

For myself, my gut feeling isn`t to completely depend on Ebay for customers.  If Ebay goes down, I would too.  A thought I had in the back of my mind is using a magazine ad down the road.  First find a magazine which has the right market reading it, then place an ad (list website here to bring in traffic).  The ad doesn`t have to be big.  Some magazines have special areas for ads.  The ad may cost some money, but how could a person not get a few customers this way?  Yep.  Good old-fashioned magazine ads.  Also, there`s newspapers too.  Guess I`m a believer in not putting all your eggs in one basket.  Ebay is getting so big that they might split or something.  It seems the selling prices are raising and raising all the time.  Hope the idea sparks an flame here.  I remember reading about Lillian Vernon (she owns a catalog company selling all types of personal and home items)... she began by placing a small ad in some teen magazine for bracelets.  Now her company is large, 100+ employees, a warehouse, etc.  For me, I won`t forget her story.  Ecommerce is great, but I still feel new business has to come from a lot of sources.  Some stuff in the good ole days holds true `til today.  I myself check out websites from magazine ads for companies that sell items.

eBay`s profit increased to record level, reflecting their fee increases in January.

I listed 3-4 items on eBay to try out my luck.  No sale

Hello,

If many people are jumping ship off Ebay, where are they going too? What other websites are popular for auction type sales? Thanks!

Hello, I don`t know if you ever got a response for your question. I just joined today. I hear that the website Etsy.com is supposed to be a really good site for selling. I know that Overstock.com and Amazon.com also have auction components to their websites as well. You should check them out too.

Overstock seems mostly concentrated on electronics and gadgets, from what we saw. It isn`t advertised as well, and seems to be languishing. Amazon is great, but it`s expensive to own a store. We`ve had really good exposure to the search engines with Etsy.com, but so far, no sales.
