The site has been functional since September 2007 and we are trying to get our numbers up.  Can you look at the site to see how easy it is to navigate and let us know if there are things that could improve to make it more user-friendly.  One of the concerns is that the layout might be working against itself in terms of attracting readers and repeat readers. Site is Jamati Online and the URL is http://www.jamati.com

I liked the site - it was easy to navigate and understandable.

But

If "Africa`s Premiere Entertainment Portal" is your unique selling position, then shout it out.  Make it bigger.  Don`t hide it with tiny type under the beautiful logo.

I think I remember this site...right? If not, I do have a few thoughts on getting traffic. First, the home page title currently is: "Jamati Online." So what?

Who do you know who`s also never heard of you that would go to Google and type in "Jamati" off the top of their head? Nobody, right? :-) So why not have the page title reflect your target market, audience, and their interests? It could be as simple as changing the page title to include your tagline:
Jumati Online--Africa`s Premiere Entertainment News

I think people more likely would search for "african entertainment" than for an unkown company name, right?

The tan on brown tabs are impossible to read, so I had to really work hard to find an "About Us" tab, which didn`t exist in the first place. To that end, I`d suggest some sort of introduction to why the site exists: something that brings out your passion for the content, and why you wanted to build this site in the first place.

All in all, it`s an easy site to view and navigate (except for the category tabs), but I think the reason it`s not getting a growing traffic stream has to do with marketing issues not technology.

Thank you very much for the honest critique.  It has been very helpful for us as we look towards what we need to work on in the new year.  Sometimes when you are too close to the project, it`s hard to see the forest for the trees.  I appreciate the candid responses.

Blu,
It looks like a really interesting product. Have you done some market research in terms of people particularly focused on African entertainment? How will you generate revenues from this site?

The market research indicates that there isn`t much information about the demographic we are trying to reach (mostly Africans on the diaspora and the continent, and then people who are interested in African entertainment) since they tend to be fragmented and operate in close knit circles.  We have had a good response but not as good as we would like.

We would generate revenues from advertisements that are trying to target the up and coming African market that has a lot of expendable income.

Wow, so this site is actually focused on the country of Africa?! That`s very cool...! Do you have any sort of data (or is any even available) giving you some number of people who are online in Africa? From what I`ve heard, just in passing, many cities in Africa are pretty much the same as in the US. If so, would you know if your potential audience might be, say, half of all computer users using broadband connections?

The reason I`m asking is that I`ve found that with dial-up, people don`t do all that much Internet surfing. Things are just so slow. But when they go to broadband, they start surfing for all sorts of information, including reading the news and so on.

So if you have a large percentage of computer owners having also a broadband connection, then I`m thinking some sort of linking network with other news sources might be a strong way to build up reader-awareness?

Thanks Craig,

Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Liberia have pretty reliable fiber optic connections so they are online all the time.  I don`t know about the other countries although I am sure that there are many more that have great internet connections.  Internet cafes are a big money maker in Africa too.

Our biggest audience is actually from the UK and Europe where many Africans and people interested in Africa live but we really want to just build it to the point that everyone, including non-Africans, is looking at the site to learn about fashion or style or music from a different perspective.
