ha - I`ll do that.  If there`s one thing I don`t have a problem with, it is coming up with written content.

I was thinking something along the lines of Momentum Environmental or Momentum Sustainable Products.  I actually came up with a list of ten different names last night - some cool, some descriptive, some technical.  My last name happens to be the name of a relatively high-profile sustainable energy company.  It`s a fairly unique name, but just `cool` enough that there are companies out there actually using it.  It`s been a while since I`ve worked with trademarks, and so I`m not sure if my last name would be usable or not.

Been doing a lot of research today.  There really has not been a lot of solid development in this area yet and it is truly in its infancy.  Europe is much further along than we are over here.  My local state is going to start requiring net metering this year, so utilities have to allow homeowners to generate their own power and work with the grid, if they choose.  If they are equipped with wind or solar (or both), their meters will be able to flow backwards during times of over-production.  In this case, the home`s excess energy output actually spills back onto the grid.

There are a few companies in this area offering solar/wind/geothermal under distributorship agreements with some of the players.  These appear to be offering product with installation, as the installation process is a bit technical.  This makes me wonder about what shape I might want this to take.  If the goal of this company were to be primarily instructional or consultative, it would require some degree of training on my part.  And if it is focused on sales and marketing, it would almost require a partnership with qualified installers, or at least the hiring of such.  Is the market ready for something along this line?  I can`t honestly answer that.  I feel like a lot of due diligence would be required.

At the same time, I may be overcomplicating this.  Maybe something as simple as a website geared toward green, that offers a few good products and information would get things rolling.  Let other more organized opportunities present themselves as time goes on.  It`s a little difficult visualizing a business structure for an industry that is currently fragmented and underdeveloped.

torn8o,

My .02,

If you do not like where you live, move.

Start a business.  EVERYONE should own a business.  Whether full or part time, money maker or money loser, the entire system is set up to reward business ownership.  As Craig poiints out, it does not HAVE cost a lot of money to start a solid business.

Invest the majority of your money.  Personally I think with the `crisis` we are witness realestate is going to be the better route for the time being.  300K goes a long way to generating some very serious postive cashflow.  Spread that money into as many properties as you can to protect your cash flow by taking on low interest 30 year fixed notes on each.  When the market recovers, which it inevitably will, you will be able to ride a huge equity wave.

The one twist I would add to the excellent thinking Craig has offered (as usual), is start looking for your business from the inside - out.

After 38 years of building businesses of virtaully every variety, the single biggest mistake I see people make is they try to find the right business my looking for trends or other external indicators.  It rarely results in the success experience they truly desire.....even if they do make good money.

You have an amazing opportunity to create your life`s dream.  Do you know what that is?

I agree, having a passion (the inside part) works a whole lot better than picking a business intellectually because it "seems like a good idea and lots of others are doing it."

On the consulting side, I really wonder how much training would be involved? I`m NOT saying it wouldn`t require expertise! What I`m thinking is to combine two things, one of which Steve brings up.

Why not take some of the 300K and buy a distressed property that`s just ripe for conversion? Then, use your time and work to restructure the property so it`s using sustainable energy sources. Watch what you`re learning, figure out your strengths, see where your weaknesses lie, and use contractors.

Along the way you`ll get a chance to delve right into the actual business as a prototype. You`ll also be a "customer," so to speak, since you own the property. You`ll also---even on top of that---be building an investment for the option of selling it. Granted, that`s not a good way to invest in real estate, but it`s a good way to get into "house flipping."

You`re not going to be doing it as your main business---you`ll be doing it to learn what it is you don`t know, so you can then figure out what you have to get trained in. Make sense?

Craig - That is GENIUS!

Here is another angle.

Do as Craig suggests with the property, record your experience and write an e-book about conversions.

Put up a web site, drive traffic and wham!  great business, no employees, lots of time freedom, get customers from all over the world and live anywhere you like.

Make once =====>>>  Sell Many is always best from my perspective:

How about "The Difinitve Guide to Home Energy Conversions" or something like that.

If you don`t it I just might.  =0))

Ah HAH!! An eBook!! Now that`s brilliant! (LOL!...if we keep going like this, I`m gonna wonder if we could maybe invest in the new company!)

The eBook would give you all sorts of content. Not only that, but even without an eBook, downloadable articles would be the freebie giveaways---each one having your company name and phone/URL in the footer or header.

You could have articles on "How to Go Solar" or "Save with Geothermal Energy." The possibilities are excellent, and all of the SEO-friendly.

Yes - I`ve been wanting to get into the world of e-books lately, and this sounds like a great opportunity to do it.  I`m feeling a new life plan coming together here!

Currently I own a house in a dense urban core.  Think I`ll start by coming up with a few ways of greening this one up first.  Then find a place that might serve as a green home base, where I can install wind, solar heat and possibly geothermal.  If I find the right place, it could also serve as my home office to write my book and then be the model of efficiency.

I have another even more creative idea too.  But this one I`m not ready to publicize quite yet ... must say that I`m pretty excited about it, though!

Thanks for all the great feedback and encouragement.  I`m starting to believe that I know what I would like to do with the rest of my life - - - :)

Most Excellent! Now, as they say....Just Do It. :-D

Actually, a lot of wise people have often said that the simplest plans are the best ones. Generally, what that means is that the overall plan should be quite simple, and this one has all the makings of just that---a simple, great plan.
