I have come across my first problem on my journey into the unknown.  I`ve decided that this is the path for me but not yet sure where to stick my foot in at.  I live in a thriving east coast community and i think there is opportunity to start a small business providing a service of some kind.  My other option, I am thinking about  starting a small internet business maybe with ebay or creating a website for a local niche.   Does anyone have any good advice on where to start at online?  I`ve listened to hundreds of podcasts about start ups and learned a lot recently. I`m also taking seminars at the local community college but at this point I beleive i need a little advice or any kind of feedback good or bad. thanks

Hello Corydat,

It seems that you`re gathering and learning as much as you can about starting a small business. You`re missing the main ingredient, what do you like ot want to do? Hobbies you can turn into a business or what niches you can fill. You probably have a gut feeling on what product or sevice you would enjoy offering. Once that`s decided the other stuff falls into place, only you can decide what you like or enjoy doing, Good Luck.

I`d have to agree with gcompc! What is your passion? Take that and try to start something along those lines. If your enjoying what you do, then you`ll do it better.

Good Luck!

In America, think BIG.

I just got a billion-dollar idea/invention, as an example.

Start with the service idea. It`s physical, right there, and something about which you can very quickly determine its feasibility. The online business is the modern-day gold-rush, and it`s a bit hectic when you`re still learning.

From what you`ve posted, though, you`re still looking for The Idea. :-) What do yo like to do?

Thanks to those that responded. Well I`m 23 and working as a cad technician at a architecture firm.  I do enjoy architecture/construction/building.  I also enjoy the nearby beach, philosophy, and self development. I`m getting into windsurfing.  I like the outdoors hunting fishing etc. I would say right now my only passion is to make myself money instead of making money for somone else. So i suppose i`ll just keep thinking and keep my eyes open.

Our advice is to start with what you know, what you`re strong at, and then do a little by yourself, meeting new people, and eventually expand into something that`s related but still draws on your core expertise.  Here`s my wife`s path, with my help along the way, to her now successful "startup" business:

1 - college, finance and accounting degree, with German and French
1 - graduated, systems engineering training
2 - computer consultant
3 - stopped work, raising 2 toddlers
4 - computer consultant, part-time
5 - stopped that, raising 3 kids
6 - took accounting courses, to get CPA
7 - stopped that, raising 4 kids
8 - found brief, part-time freelancing work (Elance), bookeeping and database management
9 - got real estate license
10 - started helping mother with online real estate business, and then helping friend with online screens business
11 - started helping husband with marketing stroller invention (slingwheels.com)
12 - provided virtual technical recruiting assistance
13 - started a computer training company (whizkidsllc.com) for kids
14 - expanded computer training to adults
15 - started local online directory, got into blogging/advertising (dullessouthonline.com)
16 - started mom-force community/ebook to both help others, and get some help (mom-force.com)
17 - responded to craigslist ad for computer help/SEO, provided SEO help to a small company
18 - started providing SEO help to more companies, in addition to more local business website help, and technical consulting
19 - slowed down the computer training company
20 - started Internet Marketing businesses (kmeinternetmarketing.com) - focusing first locally
21 - now running a successful Internet Marketing business, offering service, consulting, training, all leveraging good systems engineering methodology.

This was over about 10 years, and 4 kids - but it all came back to the initial training and "expertise", and where she ended up was very much a "filtering" process, with many starts and stops, but very constant and motivated activity all along. Note how she got to a brand new industry (SEO) from her related position of strength (systems engineering).

So leverage what you`ve got.

Ted`s right---start with what you`ve got and build on that. In the above, you`ve listed not only a variety of interests, but they categorize into several very broad areas: construction and architecture, beach and water, self-development, process analysis.

If you were to order them, from most interested to less interested, which would come at the top? Which area have you been doing stuff in for all your life?
