My wedding and portrait photography business has been around for a little more than a year. As a testimony to the site thus far, I`m booked with weddings until March 2009. So I know my website "works". Here and there I receive positive feedback about it but I wonder if it is more technically geared and not artsy enough? Does it provide enough information?

As a plug for Microsoft Office Live, the site is free and using their modules, I designed it myself. It was very very easy.

After consistently perusing other photographer`s sites, I wonder if mine needs to be more unique, more display of my work, clearer visuals of my portfolio. I want to go to the "next level," maybe create a site with Flash.  What do you think?

THANK YOU!

I think the portfolio (or the site? I don`t know) is not doing enough to tell me that what you are doing is any better than I can do with my $400 camera and my Flickr account. I don`t know if it`s the spinning pictures, the picture quality, the amount of movement, the picture sizes which seem odd, or what.

Do you need Flash? Not necessarily. Could you do better with something built with AJAX that uses a professional designer? I think so. I think you could even do better on your own if you were using a different slideshow service.

Hi nhgnikole!

Thanks for the feedback! I do not know programming language enough to know "AJAX".... is that like HTML? I am 100% mac user these days and have noticed my site looks fine on my operating system but when my husband will view it on his Fujitsu it looks pretty crappy. LOL. The graphics card, I guess?

And a photographer`s website IS both our portfolio and our store front (website). One in the same.

Do you know of any other slideshow services offered on the web? I would love to find a service that doesn`t re-size my high-res images.... Thanks again!

Carli,

Love your work. You convey so much warmth and joy in your photos. You have such a talent for capturing nuances of emotion and the true heart of relationships. That`s not something just anyone can capture with a $400 camera (my apologies to the previous post).

Anyway, I`m not a web developer, but I`ll give you my two cents on how I`d tweak your site. In my opinion, "artsy" is determined more by what you remove than what you add. I`d remove the tan bar on the left margin and the graphic border at the top margin and let your logo take a more prominent position. It`s attractive and compelling - I`d give it a little more room.

I`d also like to see larger images of the photos. I found myself wanting to see each photo by itself on the screen - without any other images to distract from it.

That`s all pretty minor stuff - if I were a bride-to-be, your site gives me all the information I need to know that I`d want you to take the pictures. Btw, I couldn`t find an address on the site - I`m guessing you`re in Austin (my old alma mater).

Thanks for introducing us to your work!

There are many 3rd party slideshow viewers made for flickr ... you can get a pro account for $25 a year there.

AJAX is a JavaScript-based programming thing, to keep the definition simple.

And I am viewing the site on a MacBook, FYI.

Joan,

Sorry for the delay in replying- thank you for your encouraging words! It is very easy to remove that tan bar from the left side of the screen, unfortunately I do not know how to make my logo more prominent.

I think after all is said and done I just want a fresh new site, with a clearer display of my photos. After all, my photos are my business! Thank you again for taking the time to write some feedback.

Oh yeah.
Hook`em. :)

Nicole!
I currently have a pro flickr account and use them for hosting the pictures on my blog: www.inkdfingers.blogspot.com However, I notice even with flickr my photos are compressed and not as clear as a high-res jpg could be, if I had them on my own server.

You are right about Slide. Sometimes even I see the photos on my homepage blurry, but on a pc, I`m never satisfied. :) Anyway. Thanks for the feedback!

You may be linking to smaller versions of your pictures, not the large ones or the originals.

I think the image quality and the video quality (esp. compared to YouTube) is excellent on Flickr.

Hello Startupnation.

Due to the feedback I have received from you and other family and friends I am updating my site completely! It`s an exciting step. When I make the changes, I`ll let you know to receive additional feedback on the "new and improved."

Thanks again for the nudge onward!
