The "average cost" is based on what people charge - which will vary from area to area and complexity of the case.  I just can`t answer that.  What is the "average cost" of a car or house?  There is no single answer to that which I know of.

Buy the book Patent It Yourself by David Pressman.
It is the best how to do it book- ever.
You can pay for a novelty search, or try the search engine at the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Learn about Provisional Patent Applications which for $105 will give your ideas protection for one year.
Find a patent attorney who will let you write much of the patent yourself. The book tells you how. The patent office wants a clear description of your idea. Fancy legal language is not desired.
A patent attorney is needed to help you write the claims section. This is where you can make big mistakes.

You can`t do this yourself and do it right.  I know people don`t want to hear this.  It`s like trying to teach yourself to speak japanese at home - ain`t gonna happen.  Hire a lawyer or forget about the patent protection.
