Here`s an experiment...today we put out a blog release about our company and the folks above at http://AdvisorGarage.wordpress.com

I`m interested to see if these headline words really ARE PR magic and drive people to read...even the smart Startup Nations folks...

Waiting to see the magic work! I`ll let everyone know if they are interested...

The title is deceptive at best, the content portrays the company or site as less than trustworthy.

You state:
"has just signed up at hot young company called BlingRing as a member.  BlingRing is an accessory company to celebrities including Paris Hilton, Shakira, Britney Spears and"

The title leads one to believe that these celebrities have joined and are members of AdvisorGarage, upon closer inspection it is clear that they are customers or something of a company that provides services to them (what is an accessory company anyways?). From my perspective it appears that your intent is to mislead. You should always keep in mind that not only should you do the right thing, but you must also avoid the appearance of impropriety.

I for one (aside from the comments above) would be interested in results of your social experiment.

Yes, this may mislead people to believing that those three ladies joined. Plus, you are going to drive younger people to your site, and from what I have seen, you are looking for entrepreneurs not children. Titles mean a lot to newsletters and other communication you may use, but do not forget that your subject should coincide with the audience you are trying to attract.

Folks...I cannot tell you how thankful I am for your feedback.  Believe it or not most of those points had not occured to me!  Based on that feedback I have changed the headline which hopefully should address your concerns.

The proposed headline is: "Hot company which sells to Paris Hilton, Britney Spears & Shakira joins Advisor Garage"

Is this better?

By the way, I think these personalities spans more than just children now...and entrepreneurs often have diverse customers and backgrounds, so my perspective is we should not limit our PR targeting to the older crowd.  Views?

Hi Andrew,

You may want to rethink this entire PR project.

What benefits are in it for potential customers? From your headline, I have no idea what you sell or why you are unique. Now, if you could actually get a quote from one of these celebrities - that may be news.

Instead of spending so much time on a "gimmick," you may want to concentrate on what your core audience really wants and insert that information into a truly valuable and newsworthy release.

Thanks for the benefit of your experience...as the total cost is $60 my view is this is worth trying and seeing the outcome.  Will it harm the overall `brand`? I don`t believe so as my experience suggests that press release come and go and are soon forgotten...

Since you are not spending a lot of money trying something new, I hope it works out really well for you. I think we`d all like to hear about the results.

Thanks for sharing this with us,

This comes under the heading "There`s no such thing as bad publicity!" Yeah? Anyone want to see if they can hire Arthur Andersen executives to handle their mult-million dollar budget? Or what about hiring Paris Hilton for ANYthing?

Like so many cliches, it`s useful to know it, but if you try to run your life on it, you`re asking for trouble. Put "Paris Hilton" in a heading, and you immediately begin to look like a checkout-counter rag. So it really only comes down to the image you want for Advisor Garage. Classy or Trailer-Park?
