Is it necessary to submit your site to the Yahoo Directory ($299.00 per year) or just submit your URL free?  What are the benefits of either way, other than saving the cash...

Steve, Google places a tremendous amount of weight in Yahoo`s directory, so it can`t hurt. It will definitely bring you some traffic as well as increase your pagerank and your overall search engine ranking.

However, only you can determine if it`s worth $300 per year to be in Yahoo`s directory. If you elect not to do it, it won`t be necessary to submit your site to the search engines. As long as a website that`s already indexed in the search engines links to your site, the search engines will eventually find you on their own.

For example, this forum is well established with the search engines, so you already have the link you need to get indexed. You`ll be indexed in Yahoo`s search engine, but not its directory. Those are two separate entities.

David,

Thank you for the insightful response.  Interesting that Google likes a paid link in the Yahoo directory (of all places) where as they frown on purchased links elsewhere.

Thanks, Steve, for the site submission link and for the link to your own site.  Lovely idea!

I concur with David.  Since you are looking to advertise your site to advertisers across a broad range of categories, it is unclear to me what the value of a paid Yahoo listing would be.

No problem, Steve. Regarding Google, it places great value in a link from Yahoo`s directory for four reasons:

1. Yahoo`s Popularity. Yahoo is the most popular website on the Internet, attracting millions of visitors every day.

2. Inbound Links. Yahoo has tens of thousands of inbound links.

3. Age. Yahoo has been around since 1995. Google places a great premium on older domains.

4. PageRank. Yahoo has an ultra-impressive PR of 9. And since Google invented PR, it places great importance on sites that have a high PR.

I hope that clarifies things for you.

I thought this site was `no follow` - do our links on here really count to Google?

Whoa...that`s not what I said. What I said was Steve has to determine for himself if paying $299 a year to be in Yahoo`s directory is worth it.

David,

Its not that it is a PAID link as it is the relevancy of the link and the PageRank (as David pointed out) that the Yahoo directory as.

Yahoo has some standards as to what sites can be listed on its directory (ie: must have a phone number and address listed somewhere on the site). This makes the source a little more authoritative and something that a internet user would be more likely to get use out of.

Not only that, but directory submissions (whether paid for or not) are never bad. Directory listings present RELEVANT links to a site, so there is no reason for Google to discredit them. In fact, if a user goes to a directory, they are hoping to find exactly that: a directory of sites on a given topic.

Paid links for advertising, on the other hand, do not always provide relevant links and are often seen as a way of artificially gaining PageRank. Getting listed in a directory isn`t really artificial, but paying to get linked elsewhere can be.
