Has anyone got any ideas on how to approach the local advertortial newspaper to do a feature story on my local BNI chapter ( BNI is a networking group  who cross promote each others businesses).

Any interesting angles to make the group newsworthy.

Maybe a recession based storey?

If you have any personal success stories about how people used your organization specifically to help them during this tough economy, that would be newsworthy and interesting to reporters right now.

Prpro, thanks for igniting this thread!

The chapter only ever existed in boom times!....really, its a 10-year old chapter so it has never experienced a "recession" before...keep those ideas coming..

How does "cross promoting" help someone in particular?

Well there is an architect and a builder in the group.

When the builder is speaking with a client who needs a architect - he recommends the archictect.

When the architect is speaking to someone who needs a buildler - he recommends the builder.

They "cross promote" each other. Geddit?

Right. Now use THAT in your marketing. :-) Nobody wants to have to use their brain to think about "cross-promoting." But when you draw an image out of an example, people will easily see it in their mind`s eye.

Selling an article or story to the paper is no different. Show the benefits to the editor(s) and they`ll figure out if it`s newsworthy. :-)

It`s unusual in that it`s local. But what else makes it unusual? How does it stand out from all the other networking sites popping up everywhere?

There is nothing unusual about the group. Not that I can think of.

I am just trying to think of some silly ploy to get some local rags (I mean newspapers!)
interested in it. I am thinking about some sort of "Local Business People Come Together to Beat the Recession " type story. I am not sure.

If there`s nothing unusual about the group, perhaps a good PR idea would be to meet with a marketing company. :-) If YOU don`t think there`s anything special about the site (and business, I assume), then you`ll have a hard time convincing someone else. And yet there must be something, otherwise why run the business, right?
