If you`re considering to use Oscommerce 2.2 with PHP4 support my advise would be to hold off till next year (January) when OSCommerce v3 is released.
As you may know, PHP4 life cycle is coming to an end at the end of the year, many of the applications that are PHP4 compatible will still exist, but there won`t be any support for them [only through your web hosting company].
What does this mean to us? Well in plain english, the developers of PHP4 which is PHP.org will no longer provide anyone with support on PHP4.
The reason for that is, PHP5 will be the successor to PHP4 and it`s more secure and reliable than ever.
Parallel to PHP5, Oscommerce`s developers have been working hard on a new release that will rock any shopping cart system out of it`s socks...
I`ve been fortunate to run a beta edition of Oscommerce v3 on one of my servers to see what the buzz is about, and Guess What? I like it...
Here are some of the new features that will come default on the new Shopping Cart:
- Able to add multiple images on a product for example front, back, sideview. and so forth.
- Able to generate Keywords on individual products,
- HTML editor on the products so you can modify your text and make the site look nice.
- Gift Card or Voucher processor
- Pay Pal IPN
- Google Check Out module
- Real time UPS / FedEx modules
- QuickBooks Integration
- and much more..
The one thing that caught my eye is that it`s Search Engine Optimized and it comes with a new structure "Table-less layout"
I think this by far has been one of the best Shopping Carts I`ve seen.. and for the people that want to upgrade to the new version, they have an Upgrade tool that will allow you to do that.. without having to compromise your sales...
