I own a manufacturing company that is less than 5 years old. Though I do not come from a business background (read here: my experience is exactly zilch), we have experienced a good degree of success...largely the result of an immense amount of hard work, a dash of luck and a steep learning curve. I now employ a full-time staff of 10 and find myself drowning in HR management.

My company is experiencing rapid growth, but we are still too small to require a full-time HR person. It was been suggested that I might want to explore outsourcing HR to free up my time for other projects to which I am better suited and move the company forward.

Does anyone have experience in this arena? What`s a good starting point to look for outside HR resources? What questions should I be asking? How is this typically structured/priced? Any insight is most appreciated.  Thanks!

Do a search for Professional Employer Organization and you will come up with lots of information.

For our two companies we use a firm named Employers Resources. We "lease" our employees from them. ER charges 3% of payroll for employees and 1% for owners.  We worked with their staff to develop safety programs and employee manuals. Through them we offer employee benefits such as 401K, health, dental, flexible spending.

They help stay current with all of the ever changing labor laws and each year they give us the latest labor posters and provide us with updates. Also they handle our workers comp and saved us about 50% by shopping around for a less expensive policy.

Anytime we have HR questions, we simply call them and are connected with an expert. To me this is better than hiring one HR person.

The money is well worth it.

Lela,

There was some great advice given here and i find that Bob hit it right on the mark. A professional employer organization is the way to go if you are considering HR Outsourcing.  You can visit www.napeo.org, which is the governing association of Professional Employer Organization.  They have tons of info and guidance of what to look for in your PEO.  Most business owners go directly to each PEO and request a quote or use a PEO broker service like my business, Empowerment HR.

Lela,  in a nutshell, as a PEO broker, I work for you.  I meet or talk with you to best discover your biggest challenges as an employer.  Then based on your needs, I go out and use my industry expertise and shop the PEO`s that are best fit for you.  There are tons of HR outsourcing companies out there.  Make sure you choose an ethical PEO and one thats service meet up with you goals and objectives.  By considering using a broker, you save tons of time adn even money by having someone working on your behalf to help you make the best decision.

Please feel free to contact me should you want to learn more.  I`d love to talk with you in more detail.

In my opinion sometimes having an HR dept, who knows the corporate culture is what keeps the smooth running of things. With outsourcing, you lose that personal touch. Do they think this will save money? Perhaps prepare a kind of report showing that it will not be profitable.

HR outsourcing involves contracting all of your HR-related job duties out to a company. In HR outsourcing you don't need to hire HR professionals. It saves a lot of time and money.

Try Kelly Service as well (use to be Kelly Girl - but they've expanded their services). A company I worked for used Kelly Services for our IT specialist.
