If you decide to build a business catering to online advertising,
consider the massive amount of competition you`ll be facing. Everyone
seems to want to make money from someone else`s efforts. What would you
do to stand out and attract enough viewers to make advertising in front
of them interesting to businesses? Which businesses?
On the other hand, if you were to build a business offering a new,
unusual, unique, or interesting product, service, or presentation, you
would have solved the above problem.
What it comes down to is that lots of people would like to start a
business doing nothing but living off of someone else`s work, products,
labor, efforts, and so forth. It`s why so many people never start a
business or why so many businesses fail within the first year. Nobody
cares.
So: Where does that get us?
You say you have an interest in finance and in movies, and that you`re
a skilled Web programmer. What do we know about finance and movies that
might be useful or interesting to the world at large?
Have you noticed that many times, particularly around Christmas, the
news includes stories about the gross revenues by movies? Is there a
way you could introduce a service that would offer quick look-ups and
consolidated statistics about the financial side of movies? It could
also include, maybe at a later date, an area for people looking for
producers and financing, maybe for indie movies.
I`m thinking of something like RealClearPolitics, which started with
the idea of bringing together information from many scattered sources,
putting it all in one place, and making it easy to see patterns and
comparisons.
The amount of information on the Web and in the world is so vast,
increasing exponentially, that our number 1 problem in modern society
is FINDING something! Automated search engines are one option, but they
don`t always understand human questions. To that end, an increasing
number of directories and libraries are combining technology with human
thought. I`m thinking of things like Open Web Directory.
Who`s doing something like the Hoover financial site, focused entirely
on the film industry? Does Billboard magazine have a lock on the entire
market? Could you do better?
