Sounds to me as if you have two situations somewhat confused. When you say you want your employees to "access" your backups, that doesn`t actually make any sense.

The point of a backup is to freeze a version of all your electronic data in such a way that it isn`t subject to damage taking place to the original. So you would back up your data about taxes, records, documents, and so forth in case of a disaster or computer crash.

One reason employees would have access to the backups would be in the event you were hospitalized and couldn`t conduct any business at all.

Regarding online access to applications and data, that`s a whole different concept. In that situation, employees would be *creating* new data from many different locations.

Networking allows creating data at many sources. Backups capture already created data and store it in case of emergencies.

Google Docs may be along the lines of what you`re thinking of .... you can upload files, then share them with other users that you determine.

Other than google docs... there are a number of file sharing sites (free and not free).

For all online backup, file sharing and storage related info, I recommend this website:

I have just started to use Mozy for online backups, so far I`m impressed with the service.  I also run a couple of local backup jobs every day (had a server disaster last February with an incomplete backup, I never want to live through that again!).

For remote access I use Windows Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) and a LINUX VPN (Virtual Private Network).  Both were essentially free and with the proper router and firewall configuration they are also pretty secure.  They allow me to control and connect to my business from anywhere - in the last two months I have run my Hawaii-based business from both Sydney Australia and Montreal Canada, can`t imagine being more remote than that!

A web site with a document portal would also be a good way to share files with your office staff.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for all your recommendations, I think I have better idea about the back up and the share docs. I wish all of you all blessings for this coming year.

I like and use Syncplicity, www.syncplicty.com   At $9.99/month, it`s very inexpensive for alot of storage (50GB).  You can tell it exactly what to back up, and the service also permits you to share files with others, and you can pick and choose who sees what file.

I think that might kill 2 birds with one stone for you..:)

Warmly,

Donna

We use carbonite (carbonite.com) for continuous online backup of crucial files.  It costs about $60 per year for 50 GB of storage, which can be accesses from anywhere.  I also use Microsoft SkyDrive (free!) which provides 25GB but requires a manual upload to the various folders.  You can then make your folders private, public, or available only to people in your network.
