I actually had this discussion with a colleague the other day, when she was building her own site. We agreed that you can market pretty much anything for someone else, but when it comes to your own stuff, you lose the ability to see the whole picture because it`s too close to your face.
Someone from Startup Nation called me the other day to talk about my website, and I realized I had not put the attention I should have into it. I was still working on my message and not finalizing anything. So that call (and I still can`t find him on here to thank him!!) sparked me to do a major overhaul, but I am still not happy with the content of it. I love the code - 12 pages of CSS! and a lot of fun functions in Cold Fusion like a rotating snapshot sidebar - but something isn`t working on the message. I explained to a few people over the phone what it is that I do, and they got it, but it`s hard to convey that over the web for some reason.
In any case, here is the site. Please feel free to comment on whatever portion you want, and PLEASE let me know if anything doesn`t work. I`ve tested it on Firefox/IE 6/Opera/Safari, Macs and PCs, but you may be using something I haven`t tried. (Please let me know your OS, browser, version, and any other info if you see a problem.)
If you want a better explanation for what I like to *DO*, you can keep reading. The company functions in 3 parts:
1) First and foremost, we develop for the web. We only move forward in our technology - use latest code, adhere to web standards, put the user experience at the highest priority of what we do. We use social media to help our clients develop relationships with their customers and to promote our clients` businesses. We love networking in all its forms. We help our clients to find outlets which will promote them as experts in their field.
2) I am, mostly, a process person. I work with small businesses, see how they are working now, and find ways to use technology to streamline and integrate their processes. For example, they might have an online store that they are not fully tapping into. So I help them to add on to that store so that they are increasing sales. Or, they might have contact info on their site. So I help them create a contact form that will enter the person`s info into a database and give the options of newsletter signups without someone having to type this stuff in by hand.
3) We offer supportive services - marketing collateral, website hosting, and things of that nature.
We have 3 types of clients: new small businesses, established small businesses in need of an overhaul, and nonprofits. These all have very different needs.
We have 2 business partners that we work with to round out the marketing side of things. (One I found here on Startup Nation!) One does new marketing, the other does classic marketing and communications.
I hope this is enough to convey our business and our goals, so that you can let me know if I am getting the right things across. My main problem is my text, but as I said it is a lot easier to work on someone else`s material than to stare at the same pages that I have been staring at for 3 months.
I debated for a while about opening the site up on here, but I do truly believe in the collaborative nature of the web and transparency in our ongoings, so here it goes! Don`t worry about hurting my feelings, because I`m much harder on myself than any of you will probably be on me.
