Has anyone on here founded a non profit?

I know it is very similar to forming a LLC with the main difference being the 501(c)3 which grants it a non profit and can accept donations that are deductible for the giver.

Hi. Yes, I`m the founder of Global Music Project

Global Music Project (GMP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, headquartered in Seattle, WA and is a global platform for the preservation and discovery of music.

I found that many of the larger law firms offer pro bono work. One of them in Seattle did all of the 501(c)(3) filing and even helped us fill out the slightly lengthy paperwork.

Did you have a hard time finding people to sit on your Board of Directors?  I find that a lot of people that I know don`t want the presumed hassle.  I tried to explain to them that they cannot get sued directly since I plan on purchasing insurance.

I`m not really familiar with the perceived risks you mentioned. We`ve kept our Board very small - at least for now.

You should have an ok time getting board members, depending on the purpose of your organization.  A lot of executives and people committed to the cause usually jump at the chance for these things.  I would find a attorney, an accountant, with the other slots filled by people committed to the cause.

Good luck!
