Hello All,    (Oops Just noticed that I fogot my T in the title. It will not let me edit it. Sorry!)

I am relatively new to SuN. I need some advice on going forward. I always seem to get this point of being excited and ready to go forward and than I seem to just stop. I think I get overwhelmed thinking about all that needs to be done. Any suggestions on keeping motivated and moving forward. I work full time to pay the bills, any tips on time management. I know and can visualize my business being a success.

(I am not sure that I have posted this in the right section or not.But because you all are here posting successes than you will have some great advice.)

Motivation Guru, Omar Periu says "motivation is choosing to do what you`d rather not do."

I think this is a key statement.

I have found that I achieve much better overall results once I tackle those things I`d rather not do.  These results are enough to motivate me to the next level which has its own set of tasks I`d rather not do.  It`s a constant cycle one goes through until you are successful enough to hire someone else to take care of those things you`d rather not do.

So, maybe the secret to staying motivated is in the approach-  First, do those things you`d rather not do.  The positive results will give you the speed you need to get up the hill for the next round where again, you first tackle those things you`d rather not do, then ride the results to the next level.  Before you know it,  you`ll be well on your way!

As far as forward motion is concerned; find other entrepreneurs who may hold you accountable (you may be able to find a face-2-face entrepreneur group in your area), or post a blog where you state your goals and post your progress.  Viewers of the blog would be able to comment, provide encouragement or inquire more about your progress. Many people have used StartupNation`s Forum to publicly state their intentions and often others inquire about the progress.

While it`s good to have an overall vision and a thought out business plan, it can be overwhelming.  On key to tackling such feelings is to break up the larger goal of building a company into smaller steps.  Of course that`s how it`s done but what`s important here is the mindset.  Focus on the smaller, more immediate goals and remove yourself from the big picture.

If you don`t have a written business plan, write one.  I found putting the overall plan on paper helped me take my mind off of the grandness of everything because I had it written down now.  Therefore I was able to focus on just parts of the plan and I could more easily move forward.

Siouxzanne — I tend to do the same thing, either running out of steam early on or not finishing the last few things to wrap up a project at the tail end. Not all the time, but often enough to irritate myself.

Personally, I find that if I ask someone to hold me accountable it goes a long way toward motivating me. It`s one thing to hear "you still haven`t finished that yet??" inside my head, its quite another coming from my best friend.

To-do lists.

Write down 5 things that will move you forward. Do them, focusing on one at a time.
And then make another 5.
Keep going until you`re a millionaire.

Siouxzanne,

I`ve had many client`s who experience the same thing. I find that "sequencing" (doing things in the "optimum" order) enables them to make progress and keep their enthusiasm up while reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed by a long list of to do`s.
