I think I'm starting a bit of a niche business so it's great to hear all the positive response. I recently opened the design studio: Duk Design, but the clientele my design attracts is definitely a very specific small group. It's great working with like-minded people but I might have to get more mainstream unless I find new ways to market my business.

Starting up with some niche business is kinda easy to imagine but then the complexity will just eventually evolve as you go along. Due to our economic turmoil that is happening, it is still worth to give it a try and maybe put some feasibility studies before trying to open such business. Small investment won't hurt that much just as long as you've got your target market. Keep your aims high:)

You would think that a niche business would have greater presence in the media, some do and some don't. Having a strong passion for your niche is what makes having a niche business great. Many times other small businesses may not be aware of your particular niche market, and some large businesses don't want to bother with it.
For many small businesses, focusing on a niche market is their ticket to success & longevity, as long as an entrepreneur has it well planned out. When you have your niche well defined, strategic planning and the right support behind you a business can go far. There’s no set formula for success but the most successful businesses are those that are able to spot opportunities for success & invest in a niche.

Reading this post made one of my clients pop into my head - Revolution Recovery, which is a Construction Waste recycling company based out of Philadelphia. It was started by two guys who simply wanted to keep materials out of landfills, so they drove around and picked up construction waste materials, sorted it all themselves, and found other ways to dispose of it themselves. They have grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years and they are thriving in their field, with very little competition. They are inspiring to me, and hopefully you! Check out their website and read their story - www.revolutionrecovery.com
I don't believe a niche business takes more work to get the word out there.
Also, with a niche, you can charge much more money for more specialized products.
On the internet you can find the people who want what you've got immediately. They're already lined up as "Presumers" on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Meetup, Youtube or whatever.
I believe that if you don't have a niche, you better have a lot more money for ads and be prepared to earn a lot less money per customer.
