I guess we all have them though eh? And they all seem to revolve around capital.  Go figure.  At any rate I stumbled upon this site whilst reading the Independent Street blog on the WSJ.   I like what I`ve seen thus far and am hoping to learn from those that have been there before.
My wife and I started a business back in 2004 that has absolutely taken off.  We started via the web and stayed there for the first few years.  This year, 2008 we opened a retail store in our home town (Jefferson City, Mo).

Our goal for 2009 is to start franchising the business.  Our product is one that must be seen and touched to truly appreciate the quality and uniqueness.  We are ready to go, but like everything that we have accomplished to date, we have no idea where to start.  So...I will begin my quest here.  If any of you long time readers of SUN can point me to the right spot/person on this site, you would certainly help me!  I like looking too though...I`ve found that the little stuff you learn along the way has BIG rewards!

Our existing websites are:
www.happypeas.com
www.bellasnaps.com (also the name of our retail store)
www.designsbyowenthomas.com

Would love to engage!

Hi BurnerT :-) Welcome to the community.

I looked at two of your sites, and the hardest problem for me was to get a clear understanding of what it is you`re providing. It looks as if it`s some sort of way to take photographs and embed them into jewelry, coasters, or other visibility items?

RobertJ is a long-time member who comes to mind when dealing with capital, business development and expansion. I don`t know, but I`m supposing that one thing he might suggest would be to have a clear presentation of exactly what`s the nature of the business, what you intend to accomplish, and how you`d like to proceed with that journey.

Hopefully he`ll spot this topic and jump in. The issue here, from my perspective, is basically a solid "elevator pitch." Does that make sense?

thanks Craig!

Appreciate the comment on our websites.  I guess it always seemed so obvious to me what we did, that I never considered putting a clear description out there.  What are your thoughts on Splash pages, or landing pages?

Not sure if we are ready to seek out any additional funding right now.  Have to get the basics down first...want the elevator pitch to have some teeth / direction first. :)

Forget the splash pages, nobody uses them. They offer nothing of value, and cause a wasted click.

Burner,

Congrats on your business going well and looking to expand. If you are looking for capital you need to put together some plans to present to VC firms. Or if you are going to go at it being self funded you still need a foundation to work with. A business plan may be a good place to start for your franchise model as well as a sales and marketing plan. Once you have these drafted it you will have the path to follow then its all about execution.

Best of luck!
