How do you find manufacturers in China and Japan? I know some of the company’s names, but they do not have websites.

Also how to you set up a business relationship over the phone? Do we need a translator?

Email works.  Try Alibaba, Global sources or TradeKey.

Thanks Travis and Trent,

I found 5 manufacturers in ten minutes from Alibaba. This is a lot easier than I thought!

Try and get ahold of Ashton, a SuN community member. Web site.
He`s been very helpful for us in just our initial explorations. Mention that you found out through Startup Nation, and I`ll bet it`ll help you as an ice-breaker. :-)

If you are looking for manufacturing, why not look to Mexico.  A lot of US companies are setting up in Mexico because the factory would be closer.  There is less time and trouble involved in getting the product from Mexico to the US than from China to the US.

Yup, we`re also just now looking into that, on the recommendation from another community member. I think there are large differences in taxing and customs duties, too. Dunno yet...still researching.

I did not even think of Mexico. I will look into that.

Where would I begain to learn about customs duties and taxing?

Try searching "doing business in Mexico" or contact the federal trade commission.
