Hi everyone, I am new here at SuN and I would like some feedback and advice on a possible new business venture. I was given about 30-40 laptops a few weeks ago. Some of the units were broken, so I pieced them together and now I have about 30 working units. Originally I was going to sell them on ebay. But then I tought, this is my opportunity to start my own business (Instead of eating my seed, I decided to plant it).
I am a graphic/ web designer. I know a little about everything, I guess. Does anyone have any ideas? What would you do if you had 20 laptops?

You could sell them.  You might make more as a tax write-off giving them away.  But probably the most profitable and Valuable is to set them up with software to improve the lives of deaf children/people, children in hospitals, or some other needy group and find people that will sponsor your charity - start a Foundation.

Good luck,

If you`re serious about starting a business then you need to start by choosing something you`re passionate about.  Running a business is a lot of hard work and if you don`t have a passion for it, you`re not going to do the work necessary to succeed.  Having 30 functioning laptops is not a reason in itself to start a business.  This is a common occurrence with aspiring entrepreneurs.  They see what resources they have or what they think they can get, and then try to think of a business they can create around those resources.  This is backwards logic. Instead, one needs to choose a field they`re passionate about, look for a problem (or, something missing) in that field, come up with a solution to that problem and take it from there.

With that said, I`d go with something along the lines of what BizOptimizer suggested. You mentioned you are a graphic/web designer.  Are you passionate about this field? How about teaching graphic/web design to kids/adults in your area? Or, how about a class on how to piece together laptops, like what you did with the laptops you were given.  That could be something of value to those who are hit hard by the current slump in the economy and cannot afford to buy a new laptop. You have enough laptops to accommodate 30 students! I`m sure you could find a venue to teach your class at the local community center, library, church, etc. This may not sound like a "get-rich" idea, but it`s a start.  Also, this may lead to other opportunites in the future that may prove to be more lucrative.

Good luck!

Start a computer training company for seniors. Take the laptops to senior centers or set up shop permanently.

Since you are a member here at SUN, why dont you find someone here that is in the process of starting up a venture, and has little capital to work with and donate a laptop to him/her? I`m sure it would be appreciated. Just because we are here dosent mean we all have the resources for something that is a must in running a business. Just a thought  on "paying it foward".

Best of luck in all you do!

Wanna make an independent movie or TV show? You could network all your laptops together for exponential processing power, perhaps for rendering. You could also use all those screens as part of a science fiction set or multimedia presentation.

In any case, with or without the laptops, what you really have to contribute to all manner of startups, what is of greater interest and value, are your time, effort and abilities.

Let`s keep brainstorming.

Perhaps we can even work together.
