I have worked as a database developer for many years and would like to know if and how it is possible to create a business around database consulting.

I have several questions:

1) How to start the business quickly and make it profitable.

2) How to find new clients. I have no experience in sells/marketing.

3) Is this a viable business today?

4) How much would it cost to start the business? How many days/weeks does it take to start the business?

5) Are there any ways to get it funded? I don't want to ask for money from relatives/friends. I have small savings but no source of income currently.

Thanks in advance

Sure it's possible. The question is "Is it possible to create a successful business around database consulting?" I can tell you now if you can't charge $300 per hour you won't make money, you'll just get by. That's the same as having a low paying job.

1) Pick up the phone and start calling potential clients asking if they need your services. Charge a rate of $300+ per hour.

2) Find new clients anywhere you can by doing anything that you can think of.

3) Could be but you'll need to find that out for yourself as your business will be slightly different than every other database consulting business.

4) It would cost the money for a computer, any software you'll be using, and a phone. You'll need to work at least 6 days per week.

5) You won't need funding, it's a service business. You'll just need the guts to go out and find clients.

In fact this is a good business which you can start with low investment. Best way to look for jobs is online as tech job requirements are always posted on business networking or outsourcing websites.

It's certainly possible, whether you can do it will depend on your ability to acquire the skills needed to market and sell your sevices and if there is a sufficient demand for such services in the geographical area you chose to target.
