I need advice in running my start up. I started my web design start up on Oct 20th 2007. So it`s been about 3.5 months. I have a full time job and only design about 3-4 hrs at night. On the weekends I can work 5-6 hrs. I bid projects on 1 freelance website.
My first project was to update a website. It was a very easy project. I worked about 3 hrs and got paid $450. My second project was to redesign a charity website. It was a small project for $350. However, my proposal templates were above average, I was getting one client a week since. It`s too many for a one man show.
The third, fourth, fifth and so on were big projects. $1600+, $775, $1200, etc...I guess it`s my fault. All I was thinking was how to make the most money. It sounds stupid. But I was thinking I could win big projects, so why not take the chance? You see, given the fact that I can only design about 20 hrs a week, it`s really hard for me to finish big projects in one week. Also the skill factor comes in play. These websites are over my head. I can do small websites but not complicated ones. Maybe my strength is copywriting. But I have passion for website design.
I`ve tried to outsource the work but it left me with very little profit or I had to sacrifice profit and took a loss. It`s hard to outsource and compete with 1000s of other designers.
What should I do? Please advise. Hiring employee is definitely not a good idea. How can I grow and embrace this problem smoothly? Do I need to bid on more freelance websites? Or other marketing ideas? Any advice will be very much appreciated.
I thank you in advance...
