Ken;
I am sure you can see the irony of your situation.
read the step by step tab above.
here you are a guy trying to sell people your computer skills, in the new age where I hear 60% of everyone checks out a company from the privacy of there home on line, and your website is under construction. first get something together and up there so people can check you out, it doesn`t have to be perfect just available.
then go to the score website and get a mentor.
then go to the sba website and gather more information.
if by then you haven`t researched others doing what you are doing, do that.
then when you have some idea of what you need to do, start playing with advertising on free resource`s.
when you start getting that down then find a marketing  professional or expert (score  has many for free)  to help you get the word out.
at the end of the day sales is the hardest job you will ever tackle until you  accept  that  you are going to struggle.
it is all about the numbers, maybe only a few percent of the contacts you make may buy, so scale your contact generation, odds are you can not make enough contacts going door to door, granted you may get lucky, but then you could just buy lotto tickets.
it is hard work generating a customer base and building a following. word of mouth is great advertising but it does not happen over night, and not at all if you don`t find original customers.
so as an old German guy once told me "stop banging your head on the cement and get your ducks on the pond" (it still makes me smile). and my wifes favorite saying (usually as I am back peddling) proper prior planning pays.
good luck

Great Advice, Stan.

Plan, Plan, Plan.  Stick to the plan.  Don`t take personal when you don`t make a sale.
Keep moving forward.

Good luck

Kenny,

I think the key point you made above is A FEW. Sales is a numbers game. You will need to talk to as many people as possible to drive you sales. Just remember every NO you get will bring you closer to a YES. Another element is why should someone by from you. What is your value proposition. Do you have some examples of your work that you can show someone at an instant. What is your turnaround time. You should think about all the great reasons someone would want to buy from you before you approach them. That should give you more confidence when you talk to people and they will feel good in turn about talking to you.

Have you tried to generate sales through the web. Since you are selling websites many people go to search engines to find services they need. A cheap way to garner this traffic is to SEO your website so people can find you.

Best of luck!

Read "How To Win Friends and Influence People" and start to
network with your local chamber of commerce.  Also seek
out the elders in your local business community - established
people in the twilight of their careers are often happy to advise
a young, ambitious up-and-comer - even if they don`t want
websites mentors like these can advise you about selling and
open doors for you too - ie. "Frank, I`m at a point where I
don`t need a website but I`ve met this young man who says he
does them well... and while I`m no judge of websites I can
say that I think well of his character",

Yes.  The real world of business can be just like in the old
movies if you just ask for advice.  Nothing is more gratifying
than to be asked for advice - and when you do the people
who give it will think well of you indeed.

I have successfully sold websites for 5 years. To answer your questions kenmc90:

"is this really how sales work? this slow?"

The answer is YES that is how sales really works.

"I`v done a few local door-to-door tries. and a few phone book calls."

So have I. I bet no one bought from you.

Even as a young person with no background in sales who is beginning his website design business you should be able to have sold a couple of websites from those calls and door-to-door visits. I would know I would have been able to sell at least a couple for you in your current situation if you had your own website finished.

However, you are too high of a risk. You come across as lazy, irresponsible and unskilled when you do not have your own website fully designed and functioning.  Why would anyone spend money investing in you as a person, which is exactly what you are asking them to do, when you do not even take care of your own business? The people who have the ability to pay will if they can trust you, and any responsible business adult will view you as not trustworthy because of this.
