Hello-

I have a business that I have been running for a few years now, but I am finding myself in a rut. I am looking to expand and increase yet I am unsure of how to market it. My business is a niche market and has appeal, everyone I tell about it says "wow that sounds like a great business" yet, I am having a hard time finding potential clients.

Any and all advice would be appreciated...  Thank you. Christina Erickson

Hi Christina :-)
First of all, put an ad for yourself on the Startup Nation Marketplace (under the Resources tab). Additionally, fill out your member Profile with information referring to your specialty in tradeshow logistics.

Your Web site is fair, and could be improved, but one thing in particular should be changed. On your home page you have a heading, "What we do." Below that is a long series of bullets.

Choose the 4 most important things, but NOT from a perspective of what YOU do. Change your mindset to address the "what`s in it for me" perspective of your potential clients. What do you *offer* those people? How can you help them?

Then, for each of the 4 bullet, write a summary sales pitch. You can always have the rest of your services under the "Services" page.

On that Services page, remember that anything online that`s underlined usually is considered to be a link. You have a lot of underlining that isn`t a link. Make them links. You`ll also want a rate sheet, or estimated rates so people know what to expect in terms of costs.

Another thing that`s showing up here in the forums is display. That, and giveaways. We`ve had  a couple of extensive discussions about how to make an attractive display. We`ve also had those discussions about what`s a great thing to give to visitors to the booth to help them remember the company.

You might consider using photos of tradeshows on your pages, to liven up the place. On the Home page, you`ll also want to explain how your company would service someone in Denver who`s going to a trade show in Chicago: how would you come in to the mix.

Anyway, that would be some of my thinking for things you could start with. You`ve also got lots of room to do some articles about trade shows. A lot of entrepreneurs here indicate they either want to be in one or they`re currently about to enter one, but have no idea at all regarding what to expect.

Hello Craig-

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I appreciate the straight forward opinions.
You have pointed out things that I haven`t even thought of.

Looks like I have some work to do :-)

Thanks again,

As far as finding potential clients.  Is it possible to team up with display vendors and offer sort of a reciprocal relationship of client sharing?  How about contacting actual trade shows and asking if you can drop off literature to the exhibitors?  In my industry attending the actual show is free (the conference is expensive) - sneak around and drop off your goods to the people displaying.

Thanks for mentioning the information about an ad on the Start Up Nation Marketplace. I did this when I first joined and since things have changed for me, so it reminded me to go in and revise the listing.

Christina,

First, congratulations on being a business owner and entrepreneur!  Sounds like you have been in operation for a couple of years and are experiencing what most of us have already been through in our growth potential.  I would highly recommend that you think outside the box in your niche market and utilize the internet for marketing potential, if you have not done so already.  For example, social marketing of forums, blogs and networking/marketplaces may be a great resource of advertising but most brick and mortar establishments are not aware of.  (Have you posted on YouTube, FaceBook and/or Twitter?  If not, would recommend it).

My business partner and I (both attorneys and entrepreneurs) have released a FREE 60-page interactive guide as to how to start, operate and grow your business in today`s web 2.0 world which provides you with tons of helpful suggestions.  This guide has been recommended by more than a dozen government agencies given its content.  Check it out and let me know your thoughts.
