I'm not new to business but I'm struggling with this idea and I could use some outside assistance.

Lately I've had a few friends who've had difficulties in meeting/attracting women. We're in college, and some cannot even hold eye contact with a member of the opposite sex. Coincidentally, I also came across a few news articles about these "pick-up" schools which teach guys how to meet women and create a relationship. The fees of these schools are between $1k-$5k for a weekend per person. They are booming and have a huge profit margin. But anyways, these events led me to develop an entrepreneurial idea that could help people like my friends while still yielding a good profit.

My original idea was to create a men's magazine which included articles and commentary about the art of attracting women. I thought this idea was bullet proof:

  • Magazine printing and marketing could easily be accomplished with my savings ($5,000)
  • Subscriptions could be marketed and taken through the internet
  • Advertising could even be secured before it goes to print

My problem has come about during my due diligence of the magazine industry. The print industry is dying, with even highly established and profitable magazines coming to a close. On the other hand however, going digital might not be the answer either.

I doubt posting material on a web site and charging a subscription fee to visit it will create a profitable business with so much free content on the web. I'm not interested in blogging either since my intention is to create a business not self-employment.

Furthermore, e-reader tablets (think Amazon Kindle) haven't really sold well yet, and have still yet to show if they are the future, so would building a business around it be foolish? My target market would have to be extended to not just my original group, but they would also have to own e-readers which would significantly decrease my market.

Although I'm in a dilemma, I'm not completely stuck on going print.  My business mantra is to help guys attract women - a magazine is just one idea to make this happen.

Is there an alternative for my idea that is profitable yet can be boot-strapped with my limited resources? I would love an outside perspective. Thank you!

You have certainly thought through your idea.  There are many magazines / sites that provide similar material, so I'm not sure that your idea is that unique.  If you are a very talented writer, then you may succeed as a blogger (although you don't want to go down that path).

Another idea is to create a dating website that targets "shy" people.  Your site could have special features that help guys/girls overcome their insecurities to contact the opposite sex.  If you decide to go down this path, my suggestion is to make the site free for all users and generate revenue through advertising and sponsorships.

Best of luck to you.

The idea of having a print magazine dedicated to the art of attracting women is actually very unique. In fact, I haven't found one like it yet. GQ, Esquire, Details, etc - are all Men's Magazines which sometimes feature articles about women, but none are solely dedicated to teaching men about women.

I agree that there are alot of websites that resemble this though, that's why I think a subscription site would be an absolute failure. Blogging can't be automated and I think any entrepreneur should be skeptical about creating a business based solely on advertising sales.

I like your dating site idea, but I'm trying to lean more towards the male market and how they can attract more women. Plus, the dating site industry is very saturated.

Hi!

I would challenge you to to think through some key issues to help you think through this opportunity:

1) Are you going into this area because it is "hot", because you love the idea or because there is a serious market need AND you have the best experience to fill it?

2) Who is your target customer?  Obviously it is a man, but what characteristics do men who have trouble attracting women (and will admit it and will pay for advice related to it) share?  Where do they congregate?  How old are they?  Are they just out of college or divorced?   Knowing your customer will help clarify the appropriate delivery system.  Also, you should interview the target customers to ask what they would be willing to pay for and utlize.

3) Once you figure out #s 1 and 2, is there enough of a reward for it to be worth your time pursuing?

Good luck and if I can be helpful, feel free to reach out.

Magazines are still viable, if you have a niche (which you do) and you do a lot of the work yourself. Larger magazines are going out of business because they have huge overhead with 100's on staff. A few people can still do a great magazine and make money. The only thing I see as a drawback may be the advertisers. What types of companies cater to these men?

Another route you may want to pursue is a web-style magazine with video and blogs. I could see videos with hot college girls telling men what it takes to pick them up, maybe some "live" pickup videos at a club. You could even charge guys for one-on-one sessions via video chat to talk with your "dating consultants" (who will be the hot college girls). They can coach these shy guys and you can make a lot of money.

Good luck,

Jay

Another option is to start a membership site where the "shy guys" will have access to articles, online help, support, webinars, videos, etc.  You can choose to charge either monthly or yearly.
