Adwords is an excellent tool if you`re just starting out - paired with constant monitoring of your inbound traffic, it can quickly inform you how successful or relevent your key words and phrases may be...will also quickly let you know your competition for placement with these keywords/phrases, based on your relative placement against other ads with similar keywords.

Spend $50, do it for a month or two, and you`ll have a wealth of information with which to guide and enhance your online marketing strategy.  Just do Google, but be sure to keep a daily eye on the clicks; sometimes you may run up your expenses too quick to allow for good traffic monitoring and analysis.

And don`t discount the extremely valuable information you can learn regarding keywords in general - smart search marketers make use of the "real world" data they can get from a limited adwords campaign, with the end goal of translating that into better organic search results.

And fyi, I`ve been using the new Yahoo system, and it is an improvement (not going to say it`s better than others at this point, but it`s definitely an improvement).

As far as bidding is concerned, you should also monitor your CTR (Click-Thru Rate).  Adwords puts priority on higher CTRs than on bids itself.  An ad that has more clicks bring Google more revenue than an ad with a higher bid but generates only a few clicks.

And of course CTR counts toward your `quality score` on Google as well, so that an ad that has a much higher CTR than others can get higher placement, even at a lower bid.

I don`t think you should "forget adwords" as long as this is part of an overall marketing plan you`re implementing.
