I`m looking for an Open Source or free piece of software to help me figure out some financial questions I have about a business venture I`m giving some thought to.  I need some software that will help me set up my business model.  Thanks!

Score has a lot of useful templates and other resources, which you may find useful:

If you`re looking for a `calculator` of sorts to plug in some estimations to find startup money, this basic calculator from BusinessKnowHow.net may help provide some insight.
Startup Cost Calculator: http://www.businessknowhow.net/bkh/startup.htm
It will help you think about line item costs and provide a total number for you.
I`m surprised SUN doesn`t have something like this in one of it`s topic areas.

As for free accounting software, the QuickBooks link provided is a great resource as well as Microsoft Office Accounting Express (free). http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/products/office/accounting/default.aspx#overview

I hope these are a start to answering your business venture questions.

I believe you can download MS Accountant for Small Business for free. Just log on to Microsoft`s website to find the accounting software.

Has anyone used the MS software?  I tried it and my PC slowed to a crawl, plus when I was able to enter data, I had to say "no" to offers to upgrade to the paid version.  Bad experience overall.

I know of GnuCash (http://www.gnucash.org). I just started another topic asking if anybody uses it for business. Curious on the responses I will get.

Features of free accounting softwares would be limited and it may happen that it may not suit your business needs. Hence, always consider of buying a retail accounting software according to your business needs.
