Hi all!

I´m new to this forum and are looking for some initial feedback on an idea and a site.

The name: www.scartoon.com   (coming more soon...)

The site: I want to build a site for online cartoons with community generated content in form of users submitted cartoon strips. The strips could be uploaded by users and viewed free on the site. There would be contextual adds aggregated by a suitable company.

Soo my question is if anyone has seen this already out on the web? I haven´t found it but I can´t say I´ve been everywhere.

Secondly could this be developed into a good idea that could attract users. Imagine the "normal" set of functionalities such as uploading your own cartoons via a easy to use interface, community ratings, sending links to friends, and the option to give specific feedback on the drawing techniques etc. Users could subscribe to certain artists strips etc...

For what I have seen cartoons is one area of media that has been left out of the internet so far in contrast to newspapers etc.

Also I´m not a coder myself so where should I turn my head and checkbook for feasability studies and cost estimates in the first place?

Appreciate all feedback.

/Kent

Hi Kent -

I`m not sure if this is exactly what you had in mind, but here`s a site that seems similar to what you are talking about.

Just because there is another site doing it, doesn`t mean you can`t do it better!

The main things you will need is solid code for the submission process, a decent looking site, and buzz.  You will need to market the site as much as possible on blogs and message boards, expecially those catering to design professionals.

I hope you don`t think I was trying to imply that someone else couldn`t do it better. I was just providing information, since the OP said he had not seen anything like it on the web before. There is always opportunity to improve on a concept! :-)

Christina,

No no, I know you weren`t implying anything.  I was just offering some advice in case he was too worried that others were already doing it.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Great!

Hey, thanx for taking time. As of Webcomics Nation I hadn´t seen that one so very useful feedback. Regarding that site what I had in mind would be a little bit more visually appealing and more fun I would hope.

So I guess that in order to proceed I need to find good coders and continue to build my team of cartoonists.

Anyone have any comments on the name SCARTOON ?

Thanx, Kent

Hey Kent - I can`t find the post, but I recall one from not too long ago where one of our forum members (I think it was entreprenerd), linked off to an article about some really unfortunate URLs (where the business didn`t realize how the various words could be read in less than ideal ways).

Sorry to say, but I immediately thought of that when I read your URL - what stood out to me was the word "SCAR".  If I was seeing it quickly without any foreknowledge of what you do, I might wonder, "what`s a scar toon?"

Could just be me, but as you requested feedback on the name, I wanted to give my quick impression.

I like the search engine Vivisimo very much; it clusters on topic concepts across its search results, and tends to put the most likely semantic meanings first....entering Scartoon yields some interesting results and something that smells suspiciously of underground xxx jargon...you`ll see what I mean, or, just start thinking of possibly a better researched variant of your term.

As Chuck says, somewhat "unfortunate", but not entirely obvious.
