POS System Buyer's Guide

Step 7: Finding a POS vendor

How successful your switch to the new system is will depend in part on the vendor you choose. POS systems are complete packages that require a lot of time and effort to purchase and install. A good vendor will be able to walk you through the selection process, help you set up your system, train your employees, and be on had after the system is implemented to provide help and feedback as it is used.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a vendor:

Products and Software Options

It is a good idea to purchase your software and hardware from the same source. Also make sure that your system will be compatible with your existing merchant services account. If you want to use the system for credit card processing, a vendor can suggest appropriate hardware for your business, like a built-in credit card terminal. If you feel you are being persuaded to buy expensive, complicated software with more features than you will use, keep shopping. A reputable vendor will tailor products and software options to your business, not the other way around.

Reputation

Make sure you look for vendors among those with a good reputation in your industry. If the first thing the vendor tells you is that they great service for restaurant touch screens and you own a hardware store, you might want to keep looking. Ask other businesses who they use for POS system needs. This can also be a great way to learn which vendors to stay away from.

Customer Service

One of the most important factors in selecting a vendor is service. A POS system is an expensive, time consuming purchase. As with any new system, when it goes “live,” there will probably be a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out. A new POS system purchase can involve construction at your business (if you’re installing new terminals) training of employees, and redesigning your inventory system. A vendor with experience and that is willing to help you in the transition is worth the extra cost.
