VoIP Buyer's Guide

Step 7: Things to consider when using a VoIP system

While there are many benefits to working with a VoIP business provider, there are a few things to consider when choosing this option for your office. Most VoIP problems can be easily avoided if you are aware of them in advance.

When applying a VoIP system into your office, know that most technical problems can be easily prevented if you are conscious of them in advance.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind to determine if a VoIP system will work for your business:

  • Power Outages–Power outages are detrimental to an internet phone system, because they operate through the Internet and not a traditional phone system. Have a backup phone system that does not require a power source to avoid these potential problems. Some companies use digital and VoIP systems to prevent any communication problems in the event of a power outage. Seek the services of a qualified IT staff to prevent or repair any computer network issues.
  • Packet loss–Packet loss occurs when there is too much on a computer network, which causes dropped calls or poor sound quality. In most cases, VoIP service providers will work toward minimal packet loss and will ensure that the network has the ability to support your estimated call volume.
  • Security–Call eavesdropping is a potential threat with VoIP systems because phone calls are transmitted over the Internet. Hackers can tap into your calls and have the ability to listen to conversations. Voice over IP phone providers have detailed information about securing your network. Make this a necessity, especially if your business works with confidential information.
  • Emergency calls–Calling 911 can be difficult when using a VoIP system. When an emergency call is made from a PSTN, the location of the call is tracked to better serve dispatchers to your locality. Since VoIP calls are transmitted over the Internet, the location of the call may be different from the information that the 911 operator is provided. Keep a landline open in case of an emergency, or use the Enhanced 911 (E911) feature within your VoIP plan, which provides the exact location and other important information about the caller.

Keep this information in mind so that the confidentiality, safety and the integrity of your business and employees are upheld.
