I am a "normal" member of society, in the middle of the pack technoligically speaking, not always the first nor the last to get the "new thing", but both My Wife & I never got into the MySpace/Facebook things (those are basically the same, right?)I hear they are utilized effedtively for marketing small business, is that accurate?

I would agree they are effective marketing tools. Especially due to the networking abilities. I use them all as it is the best way to reach the greatest amount of people. Like with this site, the Alexa ranking is high  (www.alexa.com) This basiclaly means the reach and breath of the site is excellent becasue of the high traffic to the sites.

The get-to-know-you elements in facebook and myspace can be irritating at times but they are social networking sites. With that said, you don`t have to participate in some of the tools they offer to hook you up romantically with people.

I highly reccommend you go to Alexa and find out what the highest traffic sites (social networking) and become a part of them. Many of them let you upload your email addresses to your account to search for friends that are part of the site and invite new friends. When you do this, you have the opporuntity to bring their freinds along as well. Soon you have an extended network which will help you get the word out on what you have to offer.

Fast Pitch and Ojeez are other great sites you may want to take a look at.

MySpace would be a waste.
Facebook`s benefits have yet to be seen.

I don`t think you have a product that would benefit from campaigns on either of these.

These social networks can be great marketing tools for the right company.  Like any marketing, it`s about not just putting your name/product out there but about getting it in front of the right audience.  While you will find all sorts of people on MySpace, Facebook and others, a pretty specific demographic makes up most of their communities.

I agree that these sites are great for larger businesses that are able to put $100k into a video or promotional giveaway or contest that will really attract people.  I have yet to see how these sites work for small businesses.

The focus of success for any marketing program is what you say, how you say it and where you say it.  Also, don`t forget, WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE?  While social networking sites are working for already established brands, if your goal is to increase business then your time is better spent specifically talking to your audience where they are with a strong frequency to build your brand in the minds of consumers.

MySpace, Facebook, Squidoo, YouTube... and other "social networking" sites are the new frontier for marketing - and at the same time are like every day neighborhood marketing.

Social networking sites offer "new" word of mouth marketing opportunities - word of mouse marketing. Similar to a local bricks and mortar store owner creating relationships with the resident/customers of his/her comunity, "marketing" on social networking site is about creating "relationships" - online. Yes, it is different (than face to face) and may feel odd - but it can be as effective as real world word of mouth advertizing.

There is “social shopping” - a mix between ecommerce and social networking. Sites like Crowdstorm, Kaboodle, Stylehive, and ThisNext allow users to network about shopping and products.  Your ecommerce site can benefit from this word of mouse marketing and can realize an increased conversion rate - without spending any money!

In addition, there is a significant benefit in search results and referal traffic to your website especially since search engines discount (assign less value to) reciprical and directory links.

The Web 2.0 websites need to be considered very seriously in building your network.  I mean, for the lords sake, this site is a social networking site!!!!!

When people push their product/service on this site or anywhere else it is frowned upon and that person is rejected. Just like a networking event where a person is running around pushing cards in your face - you take it, so they will leave you alone and then throw it right out.

I feel that you MUST participate in Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc.  But you must be a contributor, someone that builds the community. If you are "pushing cards" you will be rejected.

I agree.  Participation in those social networks, and others is a "must" for many businesses these days.  Internet marketing has changed dramatically with the growth of such networks.  The exposure is incredible. For me they are a great substitute for the traditional, "damn glad to meet you," networking organizations in the "real" world.

MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, biznik and others (including SuN) have all brought business my way.  They have all been important tools in promoting my business and books, while networking with others around the world.  Requests for interviews, being asked to write articles, and input for books have also resulted. For me, design industry-specific, social networking sites such as design:related, designerID, Behance and others are additional "musts."
