Hi all,
As some of you know I make and sell my own lines of specialty foods. Having celiac disease, my products are all gluten free (no wheat, etc.) and I cater to many people who have food intolerances.

I keep running out of shipping peanuts and need to buy a large bag of them. I was going to use biodegradable but I recently discovered that often they are made from wheat starch (more commonly corn or potato starch). I only know a couple of people who are allergic to potato but I know many who cannot even so much as touch wheat or corn without reacting. Therefore I`m thinking I should not pack my food items with biodegradable peanuts.

I am considering using regular peanuts and putting a note into each order asking that consumers and my retail stores please recycle the peanuts themselves or drop them off at a local store that ships things. Do you think this is okay? I want to help the environment, but I don`t feel comfortable putting possible allergens in with my products - given my customer base.

Hello Chris,

As well as owning a fulfillment business, I also have a small chain of retail shipping stores.  We are always happy to reuse, clean packaging peanuts.  As a matter of fact most retail shipping stores are members of The Plastic Loose Fill Council which advocates the dropping off of peanuts at shipping locations.  Here is their link, they may provide you with brochures that you can insert into your packages  http://www.loosefillpackaging.com

Chris, you may also want to consider using sealed air bags to ship with.

By the way, my mother in law has Celiac and she runs a rather large Celiac group - I`ll email your website to her.

Hi there and congrats! I am also a small food manufacturer and my sauces are packed in glass. When I need to ship I use shredded paper. Maybe this option would work for you? Given the amount of mail in my box, I never seem to run out!
