Hi Guys,

At present I am considering several business ideas to kickstart the inner millionaire in me, and I would like to ask you guys:

  1. What`s your take on starting multiple (3) small businesses in a short period of time
  2. while keeping down a day job?
Has it been done before, or am I setting myself up for disaster?

Thank you for the advice

Sounds great, go for it!  Just make sure to take out life insurance.

I have started one business with three distinct product lines while working a full time position.

I do have two pieces of advice based on my 6 months so far;

1; take a win as a win, don`t fret about it because it wasn`t exactly what you thought, at the end of the day you will learn more.

I started selling a product that I thought was a sure fire winner, ended up selling a ton of a product a customer asked for that I didn`t make, and only sold a few of the original product. Lesson ? listen to the customer.

2; take a win as a win, don`t burn yourself out trying to grow faster than you can grow. Making the biggest selling item takes a few hours, promising more product than there is time to manufacture will kill you and compromise everything you do. after a near breakdown, I take the orders with the understanding they may not get it immediately, most will wait, some move on, all are gratefull of the honesty.

I say go for it, structure it so you can handle it, and keep the day job until your business can support you completely for a long time to come.

Good luck

Stan

A question...

What do you define as a "business"? Or... do you have it confused with "products" instead?

Sure, multiple products are OK to start with, discovering which of them sells, then winnowing out the losers, selling only the winners.

If you mean starting something like a laundry service, an electrical contracting service, and a plumbing business all at the same time - you`re nuts. I`ve been doing busines for more than 50 years and have always had more than enough handling them one at a time. I can`t imagine doing three... part-time! When will you sleep? And... what makes you think you would succeed with any of them?

Addendum:

Whilst MLM`s refer to their sales folks as "in business" - it really isn`t true in a classical sense. What they are is non-employee commission sales/distributor of a product line for the company.

If they are to be considered "in business" - it`s as a sales business, not specific to any single company. In that case, you can rep several companies... and build that wholesale or retail sales agency.

Do I think that`s a good idea...?

Maybe... depends on your `closing sales` ability, exactly what you`ll be selling and to whom you`ll sell.

I starting one business is a task but three is wow. But I can be done. I know I started two business at the same time, but it took me a year to make them work together and making a profit of them as not happened main because you have to multi-task 24/7 to get the products and services right marketing to two different groups and understand both needs of your customers. I run a business that consults with business looking to add mobile technology  and I also run a business that sells anime Japanesss animation toys, games, and DVD titles. You can get more different than that. In the past year. I had to split my day into mornings I would work with mobile clients then at night work with anime fans anwering questions or posting ads about the latest anime titles. Oh by the way I do work during the day as a web site sales. I did this for a year. Now I just got my wife involed and we sleep about 4 hours a night. Will we make a profit yes. It is hard work yes, but we love what we do. We are commited to this if you can do that then by all means og for it, but remeber it`s going to take over your life.

Thank you for your insights guys. My line-up of businesses are in:

  1. computer hardware sales (e-business)
  2. Internet Cafe (co-owned, located remotely from workplace)
  3. Home Security Sales and installations (busy with planning, three owners involved)
As you can see, it is one service and two hardware stores, but as OldNikko is stated, I might think about incorporating 1 & 3, making it an electronic equipment store, while focusing initially on the specified products, but I might have to review the ownership structure.

Thank you for the insights.
