My website is Filmcrave.com. It is a movie social network where you can write movie reviews and make movie lists.

We are getting ready for our first redesign. Any suggestions related to the logo and colors would be appreciated. The layout will be becoming less crowded but staying generally the same.

People like that it is a true community of movie lovers. ALL of our traffic is word of mouth and we have been growing pretty steadily since we launched less than a year ago.

Take a look at our press and you will see what people like about us, that says more than what our feature set will say.

On a quick look, I think the main page is too complicated. People see a movie, maybe they love it or hate it, and they`re revved to write a review. When they get to your site, they should be able to instantly start writing. AFTER they`ve written whatever it is, THEN they can see about which category, type of film, and so forth and so on.

Make it look like a blog. In fact, a really excellent approach would be to have titles of movies....as many as you can think of...and YOU write a basic plot synopsis. No reviews, just the synopsis and leading actor/actress. That makes sure people are looking at the right movie.

Then set up for comments, which would be the review. Offer a rating system of stars or whatever, as 1 field. Then a title of the review, then a brief extract field, and finally, the in-depth field.

Otherwise, it`s too complicated to figure out in 4 seconds how to get involved with the site as it currently stands. In my opinion. :-)

Thanks for the feedback. We can and do what you mentioned. But a site like ours with over 40k movie titles, about 10k of them with plots and lead actors, movie ratings etc. in a blog type interface.

I do agree that our main page is too complex though. We are trying to provide the users with too much info at the start, and this is part of our redesign. A lot of our visitors don`t have member accounts, which means they cannot rate movies, write reviews, submit plots or comment on reviews. They simply go to Filmcrave to read reviews, watch trailers and get quality movie lists.

The other 75% use it to organize their own collections, rate movies, write reviews and make their own lists. But once you are signed up it becomes more like a typical social network except for the fact we supply the topics of discussion.

Y`know what`s cool about the Startup Nation site? You find it, and immediately start using the site. You can read the newsletters, blogs, and forums, getting right into everything, right away.

Then, IF you decide you want to comment on something, that`s the time you register. At the time you register, THEN you find out about such things as profiles, member searches, and so forth.

The "action" point is that you immediately get pulled into the site and can take part. It captures people right at the moment when they`re most inspired. Then, after they`ve calmed down a bit, they can look at the details of joining.

You can do the same: When someone wants to rant about a movie, you need to offer them immediate capability to do so---your action point. AFTER they`ve calmed down, said their piece, and are looking more logically at where to place their review, that`s when you can show them the background and details. :-)
