http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/internet/06/11/google.privacy.a p/index.html
Google Inc.`s privacy practices are the worst among the Internet`s top destinations, according to a watchdog group seeking to intensify the recent focus on how the online search leader handles personal information about its users.
I had to install a JVM update the other day.  The update came bundled with Google Search Bar and Google Desktop; what`s even worse is that the Search Bar is an opt-out install: it`s installed by default unless you explicitly tell it not to.  Are they getting a bit out of hand?

I`m actually watching a seminar by 2 Google guys online right now.

Here`s the thing:

1) Google gets your info. Yeah, they do. They use it for some pretty amazing things. I think they get something like 5 billion searches a day - that`s like the world`s largest study of human behavior.

2) Google doesn`t give your info to bad people, like spammers or the government. They don`t use the info to rat you out. They use the info to give you better services, to understand how and why you do what you do. And then they take this and make the services better.

I think this rating is a fundamental misunderstanding of how Google works, but they really can`t tell the world how they work without losing their insider secrets.

However, I`m OK with what they do, otherwise I wouldn`t be handing out Google accounts to all of my clients.

This might be true - it`s certainly what the folks at Google are screaming, it`s all just a big misunderstanding!.  But don`t you find the combination of this report and the fact that Google is pushing really hard to have their Search Bar BHO installed on every PC in the world a little suspicious?

I think the web community might just be a bit too trusting of Google.  They`ve done some great stuff and are still doing it, but I really don`t like where this is all headed...

I think they have the bar because yes, they need the data.
I just installed Real Audio and it was easy enough to opt out of the bar.
(And honestly, the bar is pretty useful for a lot of end users.)

Do I think they will sell you out? No, I don`t.

Do I think it is give and take? Sure, I`ll give up my data to trade for Google Analytics, Gmail for business accounts, and all the rest. Any day!

I remember when Nikole was advocating a position that Google (and all search engines) were "dead." Nobody used them anymore.

Oleg raises a great point. I find the Google toolbar and Google desktop really irritating. Google`s practices are remarkably similar to those used by spyware developers. There really isn`t any excuse for this.

Some of them are dying ... some are getting smarter.
