Hi all,

I've seen a number of inventors asking how to find Chinese factories in this forum, so I thought I'd share details of our new directory China Quotes. China Quotes is the first directory to exclusively focus on Chinese contract manufacturers and OEMs - basically factories who are able to make bespoke products and components according to customer's drawings.

We categorise factories by production capability enabling users to find factories with specialist knowledge and equipment in areas such as die casting, electronics or rapid prototyping. Gievn tooling costs in China are as low as 20% as in the West we think this could be of real use to product developers trying to get new products off the ground.

We currently have 130 OEMs listed, and are planning to add a range of new functionality, such as a comparison tool and the ability to leave feedback on your dealings with the factory.

We welcome any thoughts or feedback you may have on the site.

Best regards,

Alex Li

Don't go to China! Keep it state side!

So many people just starting out think you need to go to china to get the best price.

Not true! China has reduced the VAT on exports quite a bit.

Thanks to the weak dollar we are able to compete much better now. Especially after shipping charges and import taxes.

Also China never had the quality standards we do here in the states.

I can tell you a dozen horror stories about vended jobs to China that went horribly wrong.

Most of all, no one will have money to buy your products if we keep sending our manufacturing to China!

Hi, thanks for your response. I'm in complete agreement with you that businesses should support the local businesses in their community. I do however think there are a couple of considerations:

1. Without the option of low cost tooling from the Far East many new projects simply wouldn't get off the ground. In our experience many inventors will already have approached local factories and found Western tooling costs to be too high for their budgets. Again I am not saying this is a black and white situation and for some projects it will much cheaper/easier to source locally.

2. We live in a global economy whereby many Western companies would love to export to other markets - to retain international competitiveness this may mean sourcing some parts locally and others from low cost countries. Many of the larger manufacturers we deal with have a global sourcing strategy that may involve buying locally or abroad over time in line with changing exchange rates etc...

In terms of Chinese quality as long as you pick the right partner and follow a common sense approach (e.g. don't try and condense lead times, or drive down prices) you can have a very successful China sourcing relationship.

In summary I fully appreciate the need for US customers to buy from US companies, but its good to have other options as well...
