Hello, I am a young entrepreneur looking to get some tips from the experienced people on this forum. I am starting up my company " e-commerce" and i have the opportunity to take an intern for one full year. But he is the same age as me and he will not be paid. i was wondering if you could give me tips on the best way to manage interns. Thank you, Miles

My first thought is that age doesn`t make a difference. You own the company and he should be treated like any other employee. It is up to you to establish your position as his boss. However, a good boss listens as well as directs. MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO HIM. He may have some really good insights or ideas that you haven`t thought of. If he benefits your company, pay him a bonus or a "thank you" payment.

My second thought is that interns are not gofers. Their goal is real world experience. They are, in essence, donating their time to you and that should be respected. They should be given tasks that relate to their chosen field not sent out to get coffee. Tap their strengths and encourage them to grow. Let them get the experience they are there for.

In short, respect them. Treat them like you want to be treated. You know, the whole Golden Rule thing. Don`t expect perfection, but require best efforts.

Good luck with both the business and your intern. By the way, if you need some really affordable, high quality printing....
