I`ve owned 5 or 6 businesses in my life, but until now, I`ve never had to ship products to customers from a website sale. I make and sell dip and dessert mixes and microwave pork rinds. These are small lightweight items. I`m confused about the best methods of shipping small products. My objective is to put everything in my mailbox for the mail man to pick up or on the porch for UPS or FedEx to pick up. However, it seems that it`s not that easy. If I`m understanding the post office correctly, I can put stamps on a small package (envelope) and leave it in my mailbox for the post man only if it`s under 13 oz. If it`s over 13 oz., it needs to be sent parcel post and I`m not sure if I can put stamps on that myself or need to go to the post office. Then there`s Priority Mail at $4.60 if it can all fit into their flat rate envelope. That can be taken to the post office or have the postage paid online through the post office - something called Click and Ship? (How does that work?)And you can have the post man pick it up if it`s done that way? I`ve got so much to learn.

What about FedEx and UPS? Are these cost effective for small items? Or only large? I`ve got small orders of 13 oz or less, plus Priority Mail sized orders. However, when I got three orders of Microwave Pork Rinds, which are larger and heavier than the dip and dessert mixes, I had to send them in two Priority Mail envelopes, which doubles my cost of shipping to $9.20. So, it`s now time to quickly find out what other options I have for the larger, heavier orders. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially re: UPS and FedEx. Thank you.

Jim,

In general, the cost of shipping (regardless of the carrier) depends upon weight and distance. UPS, FedEx, DHL and similar services are usually not cost effective for shipments under a pound. Based on our experience, these services are cost effective when you hit the 3 pound threshold and above. You can get estimates by going to each shipper`s website and inputting the required information.

The Postal Service considers a package of 13 ounces or less First Class Mail. You can mail heavier packages by Parcel Post (usually slower and less expensive) or Priority Mail. If you have an accurate scale and the means to affix postage yourself, you can arrange to have Priority Mail shipments picked up by your postal carrier from your business. The carrier may pick up Parcel Post packages at the same time that Priority Mail packages are picked up, but it depends on the carrier.

There are several types of packaging available for Priority Mail. In addition to envelopes, there are a couple of boxes which may be suitable for you. A special type of Priority Mail is called Flat Rate and costs $8.95 regardless of weight or destination within the US. Flat Rate has its own free shipping boxes available, as well.

Spend some time at the Postal Service website [ usps.com ] to calculate postage, order supplies, and learn about the details of Click and Ship. It will be time well spent.

Thank you for your input. I`ll have to review the USPO website thoroughly. I don`t know if my customers will pay $8.95 to have pork rinds delivered or not. I was hoping there was a cheaper way to ship the 1 to 3 pound packages. My post office told me that the only way they will pick up Priority Mail that is not flat rate is if I pay online for pre-paid labels. I can`t just put stamps on them. Anyway, I`ll continue my research. Thanks again for your insights.

Flat Rate is still Priority Mail. I have personally received Priority Mail boxes that had stamps on them. Go figure. :-) Good luck in your search!
