I`ve owned 5 or 6 businesses in my life, but until now, I`ve never had to ship products to customers from a website sale. I make and sell dip and dessert mixes and microwave pork rinds. These are small lightweight items. I`m confused about the best methods of shipping small products. My objective is to put everything in my mailbox for the mail man to pick up or on the porch for UPS or FedEx to pick up. However, it seems that it`s not that easy. If I`m understanding the post office correctly, I can put stamps on a small package (envelope) and leave it in my mailbox for the post man only if it`s under 13 oz. If it`s over 13 oz., it needs to be sent parcel post and I`m not sure if I can put stamps on that myself or need to go to the post office. Then there`s Priority Mail at $4.60 if it can all fit into their flat rate envelope. That can be taken to the post office or have the postage paid online through the post office - something called Click and Ship? (How does that work?)And you can have the post man pick it up if it`s done that way? I`ve got so much to learn.
What about FedEx and UPS? Are these cost effective for small items? Or only large? I`ve got small orders of 13 oz or less, plus Priority Mail sized orders. However, when I got three orders of Microwave Pork Rinds, which are larger and heavier than the dip and dessert mixes, I had to send them in two Priority Mail envelopes, which doubles my cost of shipping to $9.20. So, it`s now time to quickly find out what other options I have for the larger, heavier orders. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially re: UPS and FedEx. Thank you.
