After much research, pain and decision making agony, it looks like
HostGator right now is going to be our choice for hosting both me and
my
spouse`s web presence.

We are looking into the
Baby
plan to start.

I will probably do a more advanced web site (or hire someone) while my
spouse will probably use the site builder.

I do have one concern though. The term "overselling" came up a lot in my
research and many said to avoid hosts who do it. The Baby plan offers
100 GB of disk space and 1 Terabyte (1000 GB) of bandwidth per month.
That is a ton. In my research, many other hosts offer that sort of thing for
much more money, sometimes into the $100s per month; not $9.95/mo
for sure.

So should I be concerned about "overselling"?

Thanks.

Well, is it too good to be true, I suppose? Are they promising you the world,
but in reality when you try to take it, do you get bitten?

My hosting company offers me more "stuff" than is really necessary, but I don`t feel like they are overselling.  In my opinion the hosting marketplace is so flooded with new companies that everyone has to make ridiculous offers just in order to get business.  I feel this is a good thing and a bad thing.  Good becuase we get a great deal.  Bad because I think the rate of failure for companies is going to be a bit high.  In any situation I say make sure you keep a copy of any purchase agreements that you may have, and to also always have a back up of your files incase someting where to happen where a company is overextending there resources by selling packages that are too large and might suddenly be out of business.

Well I`m using every ounce of it, so ...

Nah, they`re fine. I`ve had great results.

I don`t think I will be using every ounce of it....yet ;-)

But, I guess the critics of overselling say that a host offers you all of this
space and bandwidth on servers that can`t support that type of traffic if all
the users on that server are trying to use it (given that multiple users share
one server on a shared host)...so your site could be down a lot because the
overselling host doesn`t know how to manage those big resource
allocations.

If you are concerned about "overselling", you would stop using your cell phone, phone, cable internet, DSL....

Oh, ever noticed the local bus service always had empty buses? Well, don`t count on it because they certainly cannot handle if everyone in the city suddently decided to take the bus; actually you shouldn`t drive on the street because it certainly won`t handle if every residents in the city drive on the streets at the same time.

You should as well stop using electricity. If everyone turns on every electric items in their house, the whole system will shut down! Living in a cave will be safer.

All of those are overselling.

Overselling from a large hosting provider is hardly ever a problem. They have good statistics model to limit the overselling so it is never an issue. Once you get your site started, you will know that the bandwidth usage is extremely stable. A large hosing provider can oversell 100X and run a smooth operation.

John,

I am not sure the comparisons are 100% apples to apples; but whether they
are or not, point taken. That`s why I am asking the questions, to get these
point of views.

I don`t think you have any worries. I use HostGator as well and like Nichole I use every once of it with no problems what so ever.
