I am looking to set up a It consulting company that most likely will be based out of NY. Currently I deal with a finnacial IT consulting company which doesn`t have the same motivation as myself.   I need help setting it up but I can run the Sales/Marketing/Recruitment side.  Is anyone else out there interested in chatting about this and what you can contribute?

Jeez, I wish I`d run into you a few years back. More often than not it`s the IT people---the wire and software folks---who`re looking to set up a consulting company and don`t know how. If you can do the sales and marketing, you shouldn`t have much trouble finding people to do the production side, right?

The two absolutely most important things I learned in my short venture into consulting, were the fundamental difference in being a consultant versus an employee.

1. Clients only hire a consultant when they feel they`re in over their heads, or there`s a big problem they can`t solve. So when you walk in the door, you`re nine-times-out-of-ten partly a "savior," but particularly someone reminding them of their inabilities.

2. Take total charge! Don`t believe that you`re there to help. You`re there to either completely take charge of the project, or you`re there because it`s a pilot; there are two political factions; and if you fail, you`ll be blamed.

From what I`ve seen, a good model for this would be a medical practice. Same critical issues, similar liabilities, and so forth. If you can`t find someone specialized in IT consulting firms, talk with a hospital to see if they have a managed care division that helps physicians start a practice. A lot of the problems and solutions will apply to the office structure of the consulting.

That`s what I saw, at any rate,
