Hi everyone!  I am a young, energetic and excited to make money and have a blast doing it.   My name is Kari and I am currently looking to try and expand my income by doing some freelance hospitality consulting.  Essentially, I would love to have the opportunity to go into resorts, hotels, spas, and ect., try out their services, write them a report in full detail in conclusion in return for a fee and hopefully be able to get the services at no cost.  I was wondering if you could give me any information on how to approach these places to get my foot in the door ,what you think a good rate to charge would be, and what all I should try to include in a final report that would potentially help make their guest experiences top notch.  Any information you are willing to share would be much appreciated!

Hi Kari, welcome to the forum.

Well, the right term for what you are trying to do is "mystery shopping" and it's pretty common nowadays.

If you are completely new to the industry and have no idea on things like what people charge, how to get customers, etc., I would suggest the following:

Pretend that you are a manager of a hotel or spa center. Google and call up some of the local mystery shopping providers and ask for their rates. After calling and speaking to around 3 of them, you should have an idea of how much people charge and what their services cover.

As for getting your first batch of customers, I would suggesting cold calling them.

You have lots of learning to do here and I wish you all the best!

Find out what your comppetition is doing and charging.  See if you can get your hands on their reports.  Or, call some of the places you want to visit and report on - ask them what they would want to see in a report.  As far as costs - you just have to play around with your numbers until you get someone to bite.

Why not just call some places - tell them you are thinking about getting into the business and see if they will give you any information - like would they use your service, how much they would pay for it and what they would want to see in a report.  Don't try to sell them - just tell them the truth and that you are trying to develop your business model - they will understand and probably a few of them would even be willing to hep you out.
