I would like to take my business to the next level. I have a website that a college buddy of mine created; however, I want to make my website look more professional and add some features to it. I am willing to spend some money but don`t have thousands upon thousands of dollars. Does anyone know of any good web designers who would be willing to work with a small business owner? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Lots of developers work with small business owners - there are at least a few right here on SUN.

Before you contact someone, however, I`d go through the 11 steps to build a website that SUN just released, as well as search these forums. You`ll find some great tips to help you plan your website now - and planning can save you a lot of money in the future. (There`s a SUN podcast on website planning here.) Planning is important because a lot of people either hire the wrong developer or they don`t know what they want - and switching developers or doing the site all over again can cost you double in the long run.

So ... thoroughly research your developer, create your marketing and website plan, and good luck!

Fellow SuN guy and marketplace person Initech Design did mine.  Brian is great to work with, and very reasonable.  It`s still a work in progress, all due to me not having the necessary info and photo`s available, but I feel he did fantastic with what little I gave him.  www.grillcharms.com is my site if you want to see his work.

I am planning to create a website with images and pdfs of scanned historical documents and photos. I would like to categorize the documents and photos. I envision my website being a cross between www.thesmokinggun.com and a fellow researcher`s website: http://www.rescuingdavinci.com/Media/default.aspx

My website right now is www.historicalresearcher.com, which does a good job of promoting my research services, but I am ready to add some content for the public. The most important part will be my ability to add content on a daily basis. Thank you for all being so helpful.

Inexpensive web designers are never a bargain. I have heard *so* many horror stories about commodity designers - and then the client pays twice - because they have to pay someone to fix their site. Stay away from bargain basement web designers.

It is important to determine/define what features/functions you`ll need for your site, your target market, and goals for your site. A discussion with a web designer should cover those topics.

What does "reasonably priced" mean?

I remember when I worked retail, selling glasses at LensCrafters. People would come in and get a quote, then say, "Oh...that`s MUCH too expensive!" No it wasn`t; that was the price.

Other people would come in and say, "Oh...I can`t afford that." Alright, that I could work with.

Historical, I don`t know what kind of features you`re looking for exactly, but check out Network Solutions at http://netsol.com

They`re reliable and they have some great looking templates, and then if you need to, you can hire a designer from SUN to fill in the gaps so to speak.
