Hi Janet,

Is your business primarily shipping products bought online and not sold in retail stores? If yes, then take a look at how Amazon.com packs its items. I buy personal products from Amazon all the time. They never have more than their smiley face on the packaging. Its just a brown box and the product itself is packaged with regular bubble wrap or actually surrounded by inflated plastic bag like things connected to each other. The thing to note is that there is hardly any branding on the packaging. And I can see why... Unless your product is competing against other packaged products on a retailers shelf, jostling for yoru buyer's attention, why would you need exterior packaging? It will be a good idea, but it will also be worth the analysis to see if it really benefits you. The purchase decision is made on your webiste (right?).

If you are talking about products sold in a retail outlet, then you are right on as far as your quest for marketing on packaging. Wish you luck.

Best,

Sachin Dole

I`m wondering if there are such a thing as a packaging consultant and if anyone knows one to recommend?  Specifically, I need help determining how our product should be packed for shipment to keep it from being damaged.  Currently, the product is packed with styrofoam corners as I directed.  However, my latest sample that was sent to me from the factory arrived majorly damaged so obviously this isn`t sufficient.  The styrofoam corners seem quite hard and I wonder if they need to be softer to absorb more of the shock if the box is dropped.  It would be best if I could give our factory very clear specs of what is required for packaging.  Is there someone who can advise me technically speaking on packaging?  I could give more specifics to such a consultant offline.  We`re still in startup phase so our budget is rather modest.
On the other side of packaging, I could probably use some consulting on the design of the outer packaging as well from a marketing standpoint and could use the help of an expert in that area as well..

I use to work with a UPS sort center employee.  Here are his suggestions.  First, the package should be drop tested from a minimum height of two feet.  That is the height of the conveyor used to load the trucks.

Two, ‘Four Corners” taping system should be used on all boxes.  That means taping the center flap seam across top and bottom.  Then tapping along the box flaps from corner to corner.

If it’s a heavy object in the box, you should also reinforce the rest of the box with packing tape.   At least a couple of wraps around each axis of the box.

I also use to put items into a plastic bag.  I then used biodegradable foam popcorn as packing material in the boxes.

Now, here’s the kicker.  Your supplier may not be following your directions for packaging.  You may have to go to your supplier’s facility and watch how they are packaging product.  This will give you a better idea what packaging changes need to be done.

One final note.  When you think of packaging, think about the Samsonite commercial where the gorilla was tossing around the suitcase.  That’s how some delivery drives handle packages.   I personally saw one driver for instance toss my order out of the back of his truck.  The box fell six feet and roll another ten feet.  When the driver came into my store, he claimed the battered condition of the package was due to mishandling at the sort center.
