I am looking for sources for consumer report type information on different off-the-shelf shopping cart systems like Miva, ShopSite, osCommerce and others.  I am looking for things like feature comparisons, system requirements, ease of use, popularity rankings and the other decision type information.  Has anyone come across this type of information anywhere on the web that seems accurate?

Roland, this is great thanks!  Which cart do you think more businesses use?

Bert,
There are so many... and a few claim to be the most popular

I think it depends upon the size of the ecommerce program user. Large companies probably do not use off the shelf programs. Whereas smaller sites and start ups may use some of the open source or off the shelf programs.

This seems to be a product where there are several players and not many overwhelming leaders.  I wonder why?  This feels to me to be an industry that is still in market innovation and not maturity.  But usually there are some initial stand outs in most emerging markets.  Maybe it is because so many large companies doing their own thing.

Thank you,  I will add them to my list to review.  BlondieBlue do you use one of these systems?

No Bert, I don`t own a web site , but I`ve seen what the AppleCart can do as I`ve watched both  BoxerHaus and GoTruckStop have done over the past few years. I`ve shopped at BoxerHaus and its very easy to navigate, the shopping cart DOES NOT REQUIRE you to log in or create an account prior to checking out and I like the way you can scroll down to see more items in a category vs "clicking forward - clicking back" as other shopping carts require.

I`m not sure who is running GoTruckStop now, but TJ did a great job.

And Bethat BoxerHaus is following  the path of success too.

I tried os commerce but without the ability to write code it was pretty useless to me. Most people, small businesses like myself are switching to full service systems like yahoo small business and pagebuzz because the shopping carts offer full support.

For a big company, they can afford to pay a programmer to fiddle with the open source code. But it is cost prohibitive for me. I ended up with the pagebuz cart because I need support and something that works without constantly paying some craigslist advertised programmer to make changes.

I originally had a programmer install os commerce but then I was left with no support and the webmaster that installed it did not know anything about it. He charged me $500 to install it and then I had to hire other people to show me how to use it.
