Hi,
I am working on a business idea where i will have to have listings of local merchants / businesses. There are umpteen websites that list local businesses but I am wondering how they get this data and what is the most cost effective way of getting this list?
InfoUSA and others sell this data at steep price tags which I cannot afford. Any ideas from those who would have used this kind of info will be appreciated.

Any help will be appreciated. My whole idea hinges on the listing of local businesses and I have not been able to find any easy/cheap solution.I might not be looking at the right places.

Hi guys; I gotta say -- I love it when I stumble across an 'answer to your prayers' scenario such as this one but hey: ain't life grand?! check out the website in my profile; all the numbers (prices and leads) are accurate, I have just put it up so you've got a head start -- grab em while they're hot, since we all know a lead is only good if it's hot ;)
Prakaks, what is the dynamic of your website? Are you looking to have the listing of business with what purpose? Will you be searching for the businesses to be listed? Are creating a business rating website? Could you write a bit about what the business model of the website is? If you do, perhaps you will get better responses from us; like ideas about incentives for internet users to list their business, or individuals to list their favorite business, etc.
There are some sites which have business directory information list and if you are using these directory for your business purpose just make sure you use updated information. Because most of the sites never update their database. I came to know various suggestions while searching for database of business directory.
