Abhishek01 hit on most of the important factors... be sure you have a Google Places Listing and that you've optimized it as much as possible for your keyword phrases (keyword + city/state). Also, link back to your preferred site or page that you want ranked from here.

Do a search for whatever is you want to rank for and see what's on the first page... if they are business directories, submit your site to them but optimize the listing better than your competitors.

Create a Squidoo page, a HubPages page, Facebook Fan page, basically any Web 2.0 site that you can get your hands on (they're all free and Google loves them).

Local businesses are what I specialize in... let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help!

I love Facebook fan page and groups as well. I target groups with the highest number of people for my site's niche.
