I`m curious if anyone has any recommendations on a good book about setting up a linux server. I have a lot of experience programming computers and I`ve setup a pretty simple server before but I want to do it for a small business now.

What I need is a book that will discuss how to setup Apache, a mail server, and a software based firewall. Additionally, it should include some good information on securing the server. Any recommendations would be much appreciated (with a description as to why it was good).

Thanks,
Matt

If you are inexperienced with Linux I wouldn`t suggest attempting to setup a production server right away, theres alittle more involved than setting up a windows based box

I actually have setup home based linux servers before and spent the first 6 years of my professional programming life on a linux box. I know from this that it`s a lot more difficult to setup than a Windows desktop box. I also know from this that there`s a number of things - especially around security - that I could do a lot better than I`ve done in the past. That`s why I`m looking for a good book on the subject. I`m not looking for a "Server`s for Dummies" type of book, but rather something written for a technical individual.

Thanks.

Hi Matt

I started writing a series last month about setting up a small business server with Ubuntu on my blog http://www.buggy.id.au/. Currently I`m releasing one post per week but will probably increase this to two per week now I`m four articles ahead.

Hi Matt

Some Books

Linux Server Hacks - O`Reilly  -  This has some good tools and tips that work on most all distro`s of Linux.

sendmail - O`Reilly   This book is a bit deep for the first time sendmail admin but it is one of the best I have seen.

A Practical Guide to Linux - Mark G. Sobell  - Nice overall system information book.

Apache for Dummies - IDG Books - The title may sound line its a cheap book but it is written in clear and easy to use format.

Get a machine download some Linux distro`s and play, that one of the best ways to learn.  Also Look for a Local Linux User group they are a great source of help.
