What does a Lifetime Warranty really mean?

I wonder every time I see a product advertised as having a lifetime warranty:  Whose lifetime are they talking about here?  The product`s lifetime, the customer`s lifetime, or the manufacturer`s lifetime?

The other day I was shopping for a new vacuum cleaner and I came across one that "includes an extra lifetime filter!"  I was very puzzled by this... If the filter really lasts a lifetime, who would ever need an extra one?

Or maybe they know something I don`t, and everyone will need a vacuum cleaner filter in their NEXT  life???

I`m waiting for the "lifetime warranty" on NEW CAR purchases. Why is it mostly offered on items that cost less than "the return postage". I think you know the answer Oleg

Rumor has it, they used to offer a lifetime warranty with a new Rolls-Royce.

I heard they did away with it a while back though....
