I have questions about forums. I have an idea for a forum and website but am not sure where to start and what exactly I need.

Can I register the domain and hosting through a site like godaddy and then purchase a Vbulletin sunscription? I didnt know if godaddy would allow or support V bulletin.

Is it very hard to get the website and Vbulletin setup together? I am not very web knowledgable so I dont want to bite off more than I can chew plus it is a part time more or less hobby that this will be for.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Know of anybody that does this kind of setup as a business and about what the fees are?

I`m also in the process of setting up my own forum. I plan on launching it this summer. And I too will be purchasing VBulletin`s software. By the way, all of your questions can be answered  by doing a little basic research in VBulletin`s forum.  All of the answers are there.

Some people find that GoDaddy hosting does have some issues with some ecommerce programs. I`m not sure if there are issues with vbulletin.

But found this and this

Thanks for the links. Does anybody have a favorite host that works well with V Bulletin? It looks like some people prefer westhost.com and their plans look affordable.

I am open to suggestions but the host must have a pretty simple designer template program as I am not very design oriented.

Please keep in mind all of this information, as valuable as it is, is all relative.  That means that information regarding the best hosting company is really going to depend on you and your very specific and targeted needs. If VBulletin`s forum. is for you then go for it.

However, to answer the general topic on "Launching a forum"  you need to make sure that your host can offer you some real muscle when you need them.  Ask questions like:

  • Does this hosting company offer phone 24/7 technical support.
  • Do they offer more options than simply PHP hosting on Linux servers
  • Do they offer ASP/ASP.NET
  • Do they offer SQL Server support
  • Can I manage my hosting and data servers directly
  • Is website management simple -vs- convoluted
An example of an easy an direct website management tool can be found with host like DiscountAsp.net
Answering these questions upfront can help you beyond the gimmics that all web hosts use to try and `get you in the door`.  Beyond what is fluff, finding out Who Has the Muscle can save you countless amounts of trouble and disappointment with running your online Forum.  Thanks.  Just my spiel .

AllHardscaping, why are you so adverse to doing a little legwork? If you aren`t willing to do basic research, then you`re definitely not ready to own a forum. Forums require a lot of work and expertise. And launching a forum involves a lot of research. Unless you`re independently wealthy and can afford to pay someone to do everything for you, the more that you can learn to do yourself, the better off you`ll be.

I`ve already told you that all the answers to your questions can be found in the VBulletin forum. Any question that you can think of regarding VBulletin has already been asked and answered there. Trust me on this. I`ve read that forum from top to bottom. I`ve also read VBulletin`s online users manual over and over again. I`ve put in the work. When I launch my forum, I plan to hit the ground running!

All of the members of that forum own VBulletin forums. They can tell you the best host to use and anything else you want to know. There is no "one" best host. There are a lot of great hosting companies out there that are compatible with VBulletin`s software. Again, it`s all there in the forum.

If you want information about VBulletin, you should go straight to the source. I don`t mean to come across as harsh, but forum ownership is serious business. You need to treat it that way. And in my opinion,  if you`re not ready to put in the necessary work, then you`re not even close to being ready to own a forum.

Two good alternatives to Vbulletin are SMF and phBB forums, which work well with most hosting providers. I have used several web hosting providers in the past 3 years and I can vouch for Hostgator-- they have excellent customer support. They also have a lot of free scripts (including SMF and phBB through Cpanel) that are easy to install.

I did extensive research on all of the available forum software, before deciding on VBulletin. Their service absolutely blew me away. I had a question about the software, and they got back to me within 90 seconds.

I thought that was a fluke, so I asked another question and they got back to me within 3 minutes. That sold me on VBulletin, and I purchased their software.

I have a forum using the VB software and just switched over to Nexcess.net and was very happy with them.  They moved all the files for me, and pretty much took care of everything and I did not skip a beat.  I found them through a friend that also has a forum with VB, and has been with them for 5-6 years without any complaints.  They have 24/7 support and get back to you very quickly, opposed to the other I was using that took 24 plus hours.
